Secure Internet Access?

What method are you using to access the Internet (securely) when you are out-and-about?

I use a 3 mi-fi box can run up to 5 devices off it and it has a pass code same as a house set up, costs £20 a month can’t remember exactly how much that is for but I never reach my limit. No problems getting a reception and costs no extra to use outside of the UK

I tether my…

Samsung tablet to my phone and use my allowance that way.

I also use a virtual private network for security too.

There are few spots I can’t get a signal (RDCs being absolute sods for it) but 90% of the time I’m up and surfing no problems.

Am I right to say 3’s mi-fi box can be used instead of your modem at home as well?

Yes will work anywhere you can get a signal

I’ve read a bit about the VPN. Presumably tethering is easy enough? This way there would be phone costs and VPN costs involved?

3’s Internet signal used to be quite poor?

Tethering is a doddle…

Your phone and tablet will have easy to follow instructions.

I pay for my VPN which protects my PC at home, my phones and tablets. You can get them free but if you want to protect everything you’re probably gonna have to pay. I also pay for my password manager. A really good feature of the VPN is when you are abroad, you can still get UK catch up TV etc.

I recently took a Three data sim into my tp link box, I just caught them as they changed their ts&cs and got 20gb for £8. If you take a data plan with them make sure you get it on “binge”. I can watch my netflix and other things on it wothout using my allowance. That’s what sold me on it

Just a mifi box but its not linked to any networks. Puts out a great signal though

Okay… so how do they both work together?

It just slots in the back…same as the network ones. Its just a sim goes in and connects to network. Works basically the same as tethering your phone but is dedicated to Wi-Fi.
Tp-link is juzt the brand. They do a lot of WiFi and gadgets

What does the tp link cost?

They cost about £70 I think it was. Little bit more than the ones you’d get with a sim package but its a better one and also unlocked so can use whatever network you fancy. Same as most things if you can pay the initial outlay its cheaper and better in the long run

So you don’t have to be near a hotspot?

You are the hotspot…

Mobile data isn’t totally secure, I certainly wouldn’t use it for internet banking ect…

No internet is 100% secure…even the banks own.
Mobile data is actually more secure than your home broadband as it works in bursts and not a constamt stream

With every major bank…

Utilising mobile apps for banking, they must feel differently.
