This type of fifth wheel was in use right up until the 70s as we had several at Pickford’s they did not have the little noggin on top though the pin was like the mushroom shaped part and you had to jack the trailer up to disconnect the trailer and you did not have any leeway as when you coupled up you had to jack down the trailer onto the pin so I was taught to chalk a line where the drive axle was before you started to disconnect and this gave you a very good idea of where to position your unit when picking the trailer up. The trailers had to be lowered onto blocks and then jacked up again to couple up but I think the tanker company’s used to lift them as they did not have landing legs on some firms.

hi here is Albert Rosser he was in late 70s, the aec worked day and night . running steel from trostre B.S.C, Llanelli to Velindre B.S.C.
Alberts brother, Donald, a true A.E.C man.
Nice photos Dai,I remember Rosser and George Beer very well,although I didn’t know Beer ran in green livery as well.

Think their yard was on Ermin street,up the road from JWQs in Stratton.
Iirc,they ran a few Crusaders with “Dunne delivered on time” across the front?
Got any pics of em bubbs?

those were the days ,my first driving job was with dunny ,an ex wises cakes truck fitted with a flat running scotch can you beleive !
