your not wrong harry , i had that model with a second steer ( without brakes ) so it carried 10 tons legal . you could roll a ■■■ and light it waiting for the revs to die on the upchange . quick down change though , keep the pedal down and change down quick , although you still ended up in bottom gear a bit later on . me arm just started aching thinking about it !!! cheers , dave
H & S would have a blinding blue fit, and the terminal manager would go into terminal meltdown, 3 blokes to load a box??
Do me a favour!
By the way Bubbleman great postings, some before my time but plenty that bring back memories, not all good though! Like many others, DON’T STOP!

PS Between this thread and the Bewick Haulage thread I ain’t looked at a dirty picture for days!!!
Oh and nice to see Albion’s get a mention, hated em but nice to see em again!
Hello again,I’ve got to agree about the SoM AEC,a classic picture .Crazytrucker…pleased you like the stuff from earlier in the thread, but as I’ve mentioned before that when this gets to 200 pages then I’m gonna reduce my input…

Hi Bubbs, I’ve borrowed one of your early pics for the Smiths thread so here’s one in return from an era of interest to many of your viewers;
I wonder what one of those would be advertised for in CVC classifieds in that condition?
What engine and gear box would the little Foden have had in it Nathan? and would it have been 14ton GVW? Cheers Dennis.
I’m not sure, Dennis as these were long gone before I’d loaded my first nappy! Even when Dad started in '78 all the 4 wheelers were Kms and TKs, then TMs from '78/79 until Leyland Freighters replaced them in '87. I’d guess Gardner 100/120s? I wouldn’t think they’dve used 150s and 180s and these went in the 6 and 8w wagons. I can remember Gardner 202s in 8wheelers (they were gutless) but that’s as far back as I go (bloody young-uns).
I think 659 came in '61-62 and was the first one with the S21 cab.

That gives me plenty of time to catch up then ‘Bubbleman’!
My perusing of the naughty ladies will have to go on the back-burner, I’m only any good at looking these days anyway!

ps. Wouldn’t have minded this old Albion for a night out, you could have a party in there!!

It is not so long ago that we were still climbing on the box to hang the hooks in, and North Sea Ferries in Hull always had 3 or 4 men for a lift, one on the tug, one on the crane buttons and one on the chains, although it was expected for the driver to jump out and do one side. at least the dockers fastened your twistlocks. To be honest it worked well, just as quick as a couple of toplift stackers now.
Can I draw your attention chaps to the “thanks for the abuse” thread on prof’ drivers forum? Right tool posting that proper drivers should ignore speed limits
HomoFaber: I’ll shout then: how can one distinguish Mandator TG4 from VTG4 and from Mercury TGM4?
SHHHHHHHH we don’t bloody know…but give us some time and we’ll work it out.
A mercury 4 wheeler is a TGM4R=146bhp and a 6F1R gear box that is also a tractor unit=146bhp AEC 505
A …V8 mandator is a 2VTG4R with the same gear box=272bhp AEC thats a 800 series
A mammoth minor is a TG6RF also with a 6F1R gearbox=220bhp thats a AEC 760
A marshall (6 wheeler)is a TGM6RT with the same 6F1R gear box=146bhp thats a …AEC 505
A marshall (8 wheeler)is a TGM8RT witha 6F1R gearbox=146bhp thats a AEC 505
The sabre coachVP2R is a 4 wheeler V8 rated at247bhp with a 51R gearbox
so the differance between aTG4and aVTG4 the latter is a V8 both 32 tonners
where a TGM4 is a Mercury a 4 wheeler/light weight tractor unit with a 505 engine
HAVE YOU GOT IT

I’ve no doubt all will be revealed if you continue posting!----Go on my son put two strips in the next “roll up”!!! Cheers Bewick.

I think what he meant was, what externally was different about the models that you could notice to see what was what, which in fact was very little if there was no model name on the grille, especially the Mandator and Mercury and the early types didn’t have the name badges on anyway. The V8 was easier as it had a different air cleaner set up and a quick glance in the cab would show the difference this having a flatter floor. I think if I recall rightly, the early Ergo Mercury’s run on 900 x 20 tyres until C&U regs changed and they could be fitted with 10.00 x 20’s. The only other indication might be the trailer the unit was pulling due to the different weight limits of the models! Otherwise you would need to look closer at the engine, transmission etc, hope this was a bit clearer Homofaber.
Hiya …the gearbox was pritty standard in all models unless you was lucky and got a fuller so looking
there was a no go. i must say they all sounded very different.the coach built cabs gave the game away.
the ergo cabbed AEC’s was a hard jod to seperate as you could have a marshall with a 760 fitted
what was called a marshall major but did,nt look any differant than a marshall with a 505
tyre size could have been any where 900’s or 1.000x20 which ever specified.
at the end of the day quite a hard job at a glance to see what model and engine you was looking at
without crawling under the truck or the easy way ask the driver, who in the old days would have known
John
3300John: you obviously know quite a lot, so don’t lie
Lots of good info, I knew next to nothing as to what engines were used, now I know, THANKS!
But, Frankydobo got it, I cann’t say Mandator or Mercury when I look at (pic of) one and there’s no badge on the grill.
I somehow worked out the V8 Mandator had fuel tank on the RHS, so that’s one down.
I also cann’t spot a diff between TG6 and TGM6 (Mammoth Major and Marshall)…
Maybe I don’t need to know absolutely everything…

I’ll have you know sir that I haven’t smoked anything in almost 7 years! Though I am paying the price now with only 37% lung capacity left! On good days I can spell the ‘E’ word but will use the synonym COPD. Just high on life Dennis, and Matron lets me have a couple of hours on the 'puter most days, if I’m good. Just the sort of bloke you need when you start up again? Just get me back me old ERF with the 14ltr ■■■■■■■ and send me off for the week!

Hiya… not in all cases but a marshall has a chrome bumper bar.like the V8 and a marshall major had a heavy duty
about 7 inch deep bumper angeled of about 9 inches from each end…this bumper was and extra on all models
but i think i may be correct saying it was standard on a marshall major some one may know better
your question about a mammoth major=8 wheeler i’ve got a marshall 8 wheeler in a book but can’t remember
seeing one on the road…i may have thought it was a mammoth major been a 8 wheeler.
Its the air filter on the nearside that shows the V8 almost all AEC’s had the derv tank on the nearside accept
the mammoth minor which had two small tanks because of the second steer took up the space…
I think most trucks left the factory with a badge indicating the model just some badges ended up on tool boxes…

Came late to boxes WN, never pulled one until 96/97 when subbing for Harwich Express, and they gave me the wrong box, good job the gate bloke spotted it! I was as gween as gwass when it came to boxes, always said I’d never do boxes, skip motors or tippers! Only got the latter two remaining and ill health has put paid to that though I could do a box if it’s not too far, say Ipswich! First time I loaded a 20’ box I kept thinking how do I get it to the back for unloading? Soon learned though, never too old to learn.
