Bowser,

Our firm use flats (we do machinery transport), although we try and get away without sheeting if the weather is fine and the distance short, or use euroliners where possible.
What is interesting is that hired flat trailers (from such as Hudsons at Bawtry) are in very short supply right now… what sort of traffic increase has caused this they can’t say.

Hello again, heres more old pics…the first one is a good 'un…loads of black smoke :open_mouth:  :sunglasses: ,also the Dodge belongs to G.D.Bowes whose abattoir was in Norfolk…I expect LB76 Bill maybe loaded from there for Fridge Freight.

Cheers Bubbs,

Yeah your right there mate, they did I remember now, I just can’t remember the GUY, I seem to remember old Chick and his mate ( I think his name was Dennis ) in 8 legger Ivecos or were they Maggies, going back a bit now I know.
cheers

John.

I seem to remember a pair of Maggies, always looked smart in the two-tone green. It was a loong time ago though…

Dennis Hatton was his name.

I never new his second name, going back about 15/20 years maybe longer, I was in Cricklade one night having a few beers, and Dennis turned up all done up in a white suit  he looked like one of the Bee Gee’s PMSL said he was on a date :open_mouth: Is he still about?
cheers
John.

Sadly not John he died a few years ago I believe of a Brain Tumour.

Hello Wirralpete,
I took this photo at the Castrol depot in Bristol and it was the only one that I took.

Castrol closed the depot and Wincanton had the contract for delivering Castrol oil. The manager at Castrol came to work for Wincanton and later became my boss. Wincanton did the job by night drivers going to Stanlow to load the lorries and day drivers delivering it, there was no storage in Bristol.
I did a few night runs when they were stuck .The Castrol depot had a seperate loading point for each grade of oil all out in the open and drips of oil used to get all over the windscreen. The valve on the loading pipe was operated by two chains and I usually pulled the wrong one when trying to shut it off and overloaded. The photo below is one of the two lorries Wincanton used on the job. These were later replaced by lorries with drawbar tailers both with demountable tanks.I do not know who does the job now.

Cheers Phil

Lovely to see the T.J.E.Price Thorneycroft Bubbs, a farm I worked on after leaving school had a 6 wheeler version on that & it was a lovely old lorry. Shame it was cut down & made into a trailer when it broke down.

Thanks for posting them.

Hello again,Some more black 'n whites which starts today with an old “S” type Bedford of A…E.Evans…

Final couple are one of Smiths old 'uns and the last is for Dave (Macdangerous)…what a diddy container on the back of the Seddon :open_mouth:

Cheers Bubbs,

Another fine batch Bubbs.
When I started at A E Evans Sheffield depot, the Bedfords had long gone, all AEC fleet, all 8-legger MK3s and 5s apart from a few Mercurys, and no artics until 1970 IIRC.The first artics at Sheffield were two MK5 Mammoth Majors cut down into twin steers both re-reg’d on “H” plates,AYH 701H and BMX 746H.
And no photos of either. :frowning:

Hi again,Heres more black n’ whites then.

Cheers Bubbs,

Bubbs this may be of interest to you or anyone else for that matter, yesterday while driving out of Kenilworth towards Leamington an F86 fully restored and pulling a trailer came round the roundabout for the A46, in front was a car with a guy leaning out of the sunroof taking photos. It was light Green, and because I was so taken by it, only managed to see the word…Warks… on the door. I know you have a love of this model Bubbs, if I see it again or if anyone knows whose it is, I’ll try and get some photos.

Marc, that Merc of Leathers chemicals could have been the punishment motor as I know they were paid on a bonus system and there is no way he would be able to keep up with the AECs only down hill  so the driver would be earing less or working a lot longer hours. This thread or yours is like a fine wine it and improves the longer it goes on  just keep em coming mate
cheers Johnnie
