Going through old pages…What was the difference between a Reiver and a Super Mastiff? I remember seeing both as a kid (ARCs had several Reivers and LA Lockhart ran at least 2 Mastiffs) A work colleague drove one of these Bathgate cabbed wagons and absolutely hated them…

The Reiver had a Leyland engine and the Super Mastiff had a Perkins V8

Well I have driven both, and to me they were both crap, but there are lots that love them.

You might remember Lockharts’ Mastiffs, John; Bright yellow cabs with black muck bodies? Tim saying they had a Perkins V8 would explain why I could identify them before seeing them!

I had an 81 reiver, it was a good reliable motor, unusually for a tipper it had a locomoters sleeper and night heater as I ran to Scotland with it all the time. It was uprated to 26t and could carry 17.5t, try that with a modern 6 legger, it could easiliy top 70mph with its 12 speed overdrive box, it was very reliable in the 500,000mls I had it.

That surprises me that something that old could be uprated to 26 as there were a few motors around here that couldn’t be-our F and G reg Fodens couldnt although they carried 15 with steels anyway at 25t.

Yes, It was about 2 yrs old when the 26t limit came out, just had to swap the rear tyres from 10 22.5 to 11 22.5 it had a 4 spring rear and was a smooth ride. They were also popular as mixers with the low tare.

bubbleman:

Was this from Truck magazine when the 3000s first came out? I’m sure I had a mag with that picture in-Dad was waiting for Smiths first 3000 series at this time (insurance payout from a stolen 4000)

I had a MK5 AEC,1963 reg,526 GYG and it was uprated to 26t in 1970.I had to shunt to get on the weighbridge at BP Chemicals Saltend the steering was so heavy and it broke a spring down Hedon Road.
I remember the loader looking at the plate in the cab when I asked for 4000 galls of Vinyl Acetate as he said it was too much weight for 24t.Evans put the power steering back on - they took it off when they bought it secondhand.
I think second steer braking had to be fitted and the tyre sizes were changed,it’s a long time ago.I was uprated to a Mandator a few weeks later and thinking back it hardly seemed worth the effort uprating the MK5.The extra 2t didn’t affect it’s performance though,it was still a good tool.

A few more for the scrapbook.

That D reg Foden that I drove (ex Smiths) was uprated to 26 tonnes Nathan. The rear bogie was moved back a few inches, and the prop lengthened of course, alloys fitted and a spacer put under the front spring rebound rubbers and that was it, 17 ton payload. The same was done with Ford Cargo’s as well, but they could carry 18 tons. It did spoil the lorry though, it handled differently and of course the turning circle was bigger, and also made it short at the rear which made it awkward when tipping into paver’s. The F reg that I later had kept the original wheelbase which was just right, the regulations changed so that you no longer had to stretch the chassis. Then Tarmac decided to pay us for 17 tons even if we only had a couple on so it no longer mattered really!
I believe that the Super Mastiff still retained the Guy chassis instead of the Leyland one, it also had a Fuller gearbox and a turbocharged Perkins V8 whereas the standard six wheeler Mastiff had a five speed box and a non turbo V8.

Pete.

Hi there,me again,a mixed bag today

That truck never ran as an F reg; The driver was off when it was delivered after that show so it was re-registered as a G561 WLY. My Uncle taught Dad how to drive artics in 2001 with that although it was almost past it by then and was replaced with an Alpha (now almost past it).

Yeah I can remember Lockharts Nathan, The one I drove with the V8 was a gutless noisy load of rubbish, If you were going up the M40 past Stokenchurch, you would hear the bloody coming from Wembly. :unamused:

Hello again, heres a few more.

Hope these are ok,

Cheers Bubbs,

Try a right clik in the red xbox, and then right clik “show picture”, sometimes works, but not always.

It was the first thing I tried T1. It’s weird, I can view all the other pic posts no probs… the only ones that I can’t view are from Bubbs & Ainacs!

Too many pics in one post perhaps? I find if you let all the images load before scrolling, this can help. I right click to show pic but some nights it doesn’t work so I try later on…

I’ve tried that route too Muckaway…I left it on for a couple of hours this morning…still no joy.
