Hi Marc I hope you are feeling a lot better now. The 6 wheel “D” series you have disturbed a dormant cell as I can just about recall the one BRS had I think it was two V 6 engines and there was some problem synchronising them or something of that nature they would be fine for a bit then start being awkwardI think it was run out of one of the Midlands depots but I will come back to it if I can recall anything else or someone else’s input sends me into a thinking mode

cheers JohnnieHey Johnnie you just summed yourself up there good and proper like! Quote----“fine for a bit then start being awkward”!!! Seriously though the two Ford D1000s had twin Perkins V8s I believe as Ford never used the V6 ■■■■■■■■■■■ I will stand corrected on the matter though but only “cockeyed outfits” like BRS & HTS would be daft enough to operate such an abortion like this!!! Dennis.
I can assure you that Ford used both the Perkins V8 and the ■■■■■■■ V6 in the D1000.
I was workshop forman in a Ford dealership in the early '70’s and they both kept us in work.We are back in Guy 8LXB territory if we are (I’m) not careful, but I stand corrected all the same! However it is 100% news to me that Ford’s used the V6—what was the model designation? My first new motor in May '68 was a D1000 with ■■■■■■■ V8 and I certainly wasn’t offered the V6 as an alternative nor did I ever come across one in the miles I covered in the D1000! The V6 engined Ford must surely have been a rare bird indeed, and I can never re-call seeing the V6 option being offered in the Ford adverts.Who’s got some old Ford adverts, maybe they will put them on the thread.I have now dug myself down the hole a bit further but Dave and “H” have promised to put an extention ladder down so as I can come up for a “brew” Bewick.
ECC from St.Austell had the D1000 16 ton rigid with ■■■■■■ V6 in.Same engine they had in the Dodge if I remember correctly.

Ah, not sure we have crossed wires with this one, are we talking D Series as in the range or just the D Series D 1000 Tractor. There seems to be no mention of the V6 ■■■■■■■ in the Tractor unit introduced 1967. I have found a couple of adverts in old Comm Veh dated 1968 for the new D1000 Tractor with V8 ■■■■■■■ engine. The D Series range was introduced 1965 and when the D 1000 came out Ford also offered the V6 ■■■■■■■ in the rigid 6 Wheeler also designated D 1000. This may not have been the correct designation but it seems everyone used it to describe the Ford with the chrome strip along the cab front. I believe Dennis, from what he said in his post, meant the engines fitted to the artic and not the others in the range. Looks like another 8LXB type thread a coming! Franky.
The D1000 was obvious with the chrome front bumper.
The models I am referring to with the ■■■■■■■ V6 were the 2 and 3 axle rigids.
The tractor units had the Perkins V8 in,Tesco had a lot in the early '70’s.

Well explained bb,Ford did offer “their” V8 after the ■■■■■■■■■ can’t comment on the 4&6 wheel rigid D series, but those I did see only seemed to have the Ford engine in in both natural and turbo specs.Never once did I see of read about a V6 ■■■■■■■ engined Ford!!! Cheers Dennis.
Dennis your right we had loads of D series at HTS and never had one with a v6 ■■■■■■■ only a v8 or a v8 polly 540 which to be honest when going ok the ■■■■■■■ v8 were miles in front of the polly they never had thre fuel guvnors comming in so quick and making that droning er er er noise they made at about 60mph thats why all the fords drivers were on about a grand a week and a stutter As for the twin every thing motor it had 2 360 6 pot D 800 engines in and was always under going tests I never saw it go out and in the end went back to Fords that was a Fords shot at Surrey Dock
it had two gearboxes props and 1 drove 1 axel and the other the rear one It was said there were 3 of them BRS had one and so did Peter Lane
as for the Dseries you could have the v8 ■■■■■■■ or Perkins or 360 6 pot or 360 turbo the 360 turbo had a chrome bumber but narrow front wings
and was 24 ton gross the v8 28 ton gross I think not 100% sure but the Ktype Dodge had the v6 also as well as the BIG j
Mark love those Suttons pics any of the Green ergos or Park royal ones they had. As for that Sed Atki That used to park at Truckworld went all over europe the roof conversion was a one off by B&Q but everest done them in the end had more room than a spacecab and topliner and even had 2 wall of death riders going round in it and a 10 screen cinama still leaste he could stand in it .
There is an article in this months Trucking Mag on Ford’s, and I qoute " The D series could be specced up to 185 bhp, delivered by a choice of two V8 engines, an 8.3 liter ■■■■■■■ or an 8.4 liter Ford", no mention of the Perkins, which I found odd.
Also no mention of a V6.

Hiya Ken thats just the ticket! someone who has the “full strength” on the Fords!! and if one of Ralphs drivers hasn’t no (zb) has! I must say I was never impressed with the V8 Perkins in the Ford or the K series Dodge.Somehow the V8 Perkinsin the Mastiff was the better installation—well to me anyhow! And both ours were 99.9% reliable during the time we ran them.As for the V6 ■■■■■■■ it must rank as one of the worst engines ever produced,it was just a noisy bag of (zb) to me.Whereas the V8 which I drove as a 16 ton D1000 4 wheeler was a reliable motor for me,again during the time I ran it.

Hiya dds the “Ford” V8 was the Perkins with the rocker covers impressed with the ford name.I’m not to sure if Ford built them under licence but I doubt it,it wasn’t that far to Peterborough from Langley so I would think Perkins just made the few cosmetic changes and “bingo” a FordV8!! Bewick.
Great picture Dennis used to love the mastiffs wernt to mant down here Robins Transport had three two 4 wheelers and a unit in Dark Blue and Red
all trimed and lined in gold leaf used to look great and C&H Hauliers had a drawbar outfit Mastiff real nice looking lorry love those in the red.Shame
BL always had to ■■■■ about with badges never knew if you had a BMC Austin Morris all bathgate cabs thou remember the one before that dont know what its model was ff or ■■ or something like a bath gate cab with twin head lights quite nice looking

That seems to contradict what I’ve read about these motors, the articles I read (I’ll look them up again to check) say the engines were V ■■■■■■■■ maybe they got it wrong by presuming the normal D1000 Tractor had V8’s so assumed these vehicles did too, it won’t be the first time this particular mag got things wrong. I remember thinking at the time two V engines would take some shoe horning into the Ford chassis! Finally despite some saying ‘yes’ Fords did use the V6 ■■■■■■■ in the D1000, they mean the rigid and not the tractor which only used the V8, the ■■■■■■■ Vale (I know this because we had problems with water in the fuel on F reg D1000 units with the ■■■■■■■ Vale fitted and my old man drove an F Reg with the ■■■■■■■ Vale V8, with very little problems, the engine gave no trouble the time he had it.) However due to problems others had with the ■■■■■■■■ V6 and 8, Ford decided to use the Perkins, built under license with the Ford name on the Rocker covers in later models and through to the end of production(two versions). Incidently the Dodge 500 series also used the ■■■■■■■ Vale V8 again built under license and known as the Chrysler V8 but they also found this engine to be unpopular and changed to the Perkins V8-410. The Dodge was introduced 1964 and the Ford D1000 1967. Franky.

Much better talking about motors like these Ken!!I think the motor your on about with stacked headlights was the Laird, the mastiff chassis was ,in fact ,a Guy Big j chassis, spring brakes, same road springs ect ect.But the Mastiff used the Eaton 2 spd axle which gave 10 gears, our H reg 26 ton had the lighter 1800 series and the J reg 28ton had the heavier 1900 series. This is a shot of the D1000 I had from new in May '68,it also had the Eaton 2 spd Axle/5 spd G/box.Dennis.

Dennis, thats a nice shot of the mastiffs. My father ran 2 16ton ridgids on H plates, one a boxer with the 6354, the other a mastiff with the V8. The V8 was troublesome mostly fuel related, and was replaced with a big J fitted with a Leyland 401. The Bathgate cabs were great for 3 men crews, and visability was better than most cabs of that time.
I had a D series 6 wheel tipper with the Perkins V8 540, and must say it never let me down, and with a 5 spd box and Eaton two spd axle performed well even in the hilly terrain in South Wales.
I think if you maintained the engines yourself, you coulld fix the faults, if it went to a dealer ie Ford, Dodge or Leyland forget it as it was not ONE of their engines, even under warranty.
Regards Paul
