Scrapbook Memories (Part 1)

We must be able to identify those few cans in the fridge of that Transcon.

Heinz Tomato Soup on the hob,

Spaghetti, Vegetable Salad and Campbells Soup in the coolbox. And enamel mugs, I am still looking for one of those

What a waste of cold space :smiling_imp: . Bacon, butter, tins of Tennents Lager, Heinekin, Becks, Grolsch and Efes go in the fridge. Yer long life milk and eggs can go on the step and the rest of the tins can go in a cardboard box under the bottom bunk or in the trailer box  .

With a nice tidy cab, table laid and not a beer can in sight, it must be driven by the woman in the reflection of the sink mirror :open_mouth:

Regards,

Mark.

Simply magnificent  The first lot taken at Leyland, of course!

After this, Graham Wodcock went 38 tonne, with an ex-Killingbeck 6x4 Atki:

And here’s what Antell’s double-drive unit looked like before they converted it from its original rear steer format:

Both of these motors are alive and well in preservation now.

Cracking shots of the Atkis Bubbs especially our old Bewick tractor ONL482M.A bit of history on this old girl,I picked her up via a dealer pal direct from Atkinson at Club St. Bamber Bridge in late '74.It had been regisered by Atkis and placed in the Waugh fleet in Newcastle as a demo, but as the “brothers” were quite active at the time the Shop steward “blacked” it ‘cause it didn’t have power steering! So it was parked up at B/bridge with very little mileage on her. When we put it into service in Jan 75’ it joined the McGuffie fleet and it ran on nights to Daventry and back and days, initially,to West ■■■■■■■ where the day man tipped new 45 gal drums in Marchon and either re-loaded there or ,more often than not, out of Workington Steel for Lancs/Cheshire with Rail for the docks or pig iron for Midland roller makers at Crewe maybe. It did a couple of years on this job then it was replaced with a late '75 Sed/Atk 8LXB.The spec of the Atki was 220 ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ 9509/Kirkstall HR.Its a pity that the tractor didn’t have P/S but then we wouldn’t have had a sniff at it I suppose! But it was a cracking tractor for us and it never put a foot wrong! Bewick.

Unusual to see an Atki with an areofoil. Doesn’t look right somehow, does it?

Anyone know anything about Jubilee Transport & their Scania Vabis? I remember a Jubilee Transport from Wishaw who ran Big Js in the early 70s, but they were light blue. Not the same team I guess?

Just a thought Dennis but could a virtually new motor (little mileage) not have been convertible to power steering at not too much cost, but i never found the Atki’s too bad on the handlebars anyway even without the power assist.
thanks harry long retired.

The guy on the left holding the clip board is phillip hemmings, they used to pull out of round oak steelworks in dudley, when the steelworks closed in the 80`s they decided to call it a day and packed up. we have got their old garage at lenches bridge in pensnett dudley. phill sold the land to t-wall vauxhall about 4 years ago.

Hiya “H” we ran a good number of Atkis that came to us 2nd hand without P/S and they were OK on the “handlebars” but ZF P/S was the “dogs”!We did fit AIR-O-Matic P/S to our 3rd new Atki OJM480L as well as to a new Seddon 34/4 OJM483L we supplied to the Paper mill, and for some reason the steering on the Atki was never 100% but on the Seddon it was “spot on” we could never work out why! This is a shot of ONL482M at work in '75 and is seen here exiting Heysham Harbour with ,I think,a load of spuds for the Smoke trunk.Normally we never touched traffic out the harbour as it was (zb) loads and (zb)rates and we wouldn’t operate like the regular “cowboy” outfits did and bend every rule in the book to be on a market somewhere at 4am next morning!!!

That is the good old days, when wives and children were welcomed in factories and lorry cabs, even if it was the bosses family :stuck_out_tongue:

Lovely shot too, but brings back memories of 180 and 400 grit wet & dry and a rubbing block :open_mouth:

This was a shot long after the Atki was taken out of service and I think it was down at the Leyland museum when the phot was taken. One observation I can make that would never have happened when it was in service is the “Tubed” 1000x20s on the rear and Tubeless 1100X22.5 on the fron’t.It would seem that our tyre fitter had just fitted it up with what he had available,it was still well tyred all the same,4 matching on the back ,same on the fron’t! Dennis.

Sure would Dave,I’m not in my grave yet but some of the shots make you(zb) “turn”!!!The main of the “modern” drivers couldn’t load a (zb)rifle, thats why the “jobsworths” at VOSA have stuck their nose in and are now dictating how to do the job!!Dennis.

Dave.

Carl,
In the 60’s 70’s J&S Hemmings were one of the biggest customers for the then Scania agents B&W motors (Bradburn & Wedge derry st.Wolverhampton) whom I worked for at the time as a mechanic. J&S ran quite a big fleet of Scania’s mainly on steel work. The early 76 vabis were spec’d with low ratio diffs and only had a top speed of 45mph or so and were a regular sight on the M1 running to Sheffield and back . About 72 B&W the Scania agent moved to Pensnett trading estate almost next door to J&S Hemmings at Lenches bridge.

Is anyone else having trouble seeing Marcs pixs? All I am getting is red xs…there is no problem seeing the other posters pix

I’m struggling to see them aswell, happens every now and again even when I wait until all pictures are uploaded before scrolling up and down…
