May seem a stupid question but was the trailer on this truck on a fifth wheel? As it looks a bit odd
Your right there it does, think it maybe a close coupled trailer.
The coupling arrangement0
Blimey never seen anything like that, so it is more or less a fifth wheel.
If my memory serves me correctly it was Foden’s means of using the proposed 32 ton limit, it didn’t catch on but I thought that it seemed a sensible set up and a brave experiment for the manufacturer. Trailer length would have been restricted though, but at least you could have left the trailer at the first drop to be unloaded while you took the rigid to point B. It may get reinvented “one day”?
Hiya…they use that 5th wheel idea in Canada. in the early 80s they would have three trailers altogether.but times have changed like in the uk
and they only run 2 nowadays

Hi All that pic of Harveys takes me back ,they also had a tanker with the same configuration. I may be wrong but i seem to remember someone telling me it ran to spain for sherry, this would be in the sixties about the same time that A D Forsey was running to spain with marroon mandaters, Keep up the good work Bubbs.
Thanks for the info on that Foden windrush, as I said I have never seen anything like it, and I have been around the block a few times!!!

Good pics of proper lorries Marcus! I remember the Harveys TwinLoad very clearly as it used to come through Reading on a regular basis, had the MK V11 stroker in it I guess judging by the front grille vent’s. Harveys also had a 3 wheeled Scammell Townsman artic that did the same journey at times (Bristol-London and back) which was possibly a longer trip than Scammell’s had envisaged when they constructed it!!
Also used to call at the Ridgeway with my old man on our journey’s to and from Avonmouth Docks in the 60’s, I THINK that it may still be operating, maybe someone can confirm this?Pete.
The site of the Ridgeway cafe is now a small car park for people using the Ridgeway walking path which crosses the A4 at that point. Adrians lay-by
is still there.
Phil.
Anybody remember the Golden Arrow, midway between Hungerford and Marlborough ? Think it became “The Klondike Road house”
Went past it last week and the fuel pumps/garage is still there(albeit in a derilict state)theres a half finished building where the Cafe used to be.

As the Klondike, it had a big sign saying, “GOOD EATS HERE” !
It’s an Indian restaurant now, and I think the building work is a revamp and development of the restaurant.
Hello again, todays selection is slightly different…I’ve been to Shirleys Transport on a few occasions and always recieved a warm welcome, here are a few pics from the company…they certainly get their moneys worth from a wagon…before and after.
An F10 on the M4 to finish with…just to add to this, none of the pics are recent ones, probably a lot of the stuff in the graveyard have gone
Cheers Bubbs,
most of the old trucks have recently gone to the scrap yard.as he as had a big clear out to make some room . a couple of f10’s are being restored by two young lads out of the garage .
You never fail to impress Bubb, another set of great pictures,i think the older vehicles had more character,we just got 5 new Scanias and they seem to be getting tinnier, but still better than most…Do you have any pictures of H.Bakers AECs or Wilsons of Bradford or Jack Ashworths??

Hiya …svt …the F86 always looked the bizz i don,t know why…just look at PRF my mate had her new. he has the blue 88 now on the show scene.
what a mess HEH looks well not for much longer there,s a cab coming for her she,s been stripped down to the chassis.and going to be done again.
John
bought this one off arthur shirley last month, he said he had got rid of about twenty
Another interesting pic for you Marc!
Terry Moody came up with this pic of one of my Scania 6X2 tag 113’s doing a ‘wheelie’
This happened near Swanage and we were delivering a 50 ton wheeled crusher to a stone yard and had to go up a very steep hill to get there! the driver was Jason King.
Muckaway:
Great pic of the ARC Scammell Bubbs. been after a pic of an ARC truck as I’m planning to paint some 2nd hand models I’ve bought as jumble but not sure what “mustard shade” to buy! shouldn’t be too hard to match now, just need the right transfers!
The Foxbury Farm TM; They still run a Foden unit with (I think a unit mounted hiab) on a D reg.
It was always said to be Yellow but I’m pretty sure the log books used to call that ARC colour Green Muckaway. A lot of the tipper boys round your way probably still have some in the garage. I was just clicking back through trying to find that Scammell picture because I’ve got a picture here of an ARC Scammell lined up waiting to tip Tarmac & I thought it was the same lorry but it’s fleet number 2189, a sister ship to the nice new one in the photo.

My memories of the Golden Arrow goes back to the 1960,s and three things stick in my mind. All the stuff that appeared for sale as Christmas was nearing, the open air toilet out the back where you could pee and stargaze at the same time and the most vivid memory is the rather large chap who served dressed in a grubby white vest. It was a busy place and the empty teacups were lined up on a metal grill and filled with a teapot with two spouts.I would imagine all the spillage from between the cups that went through the grill was diverted into the next teapot to be used.
Phil.
Hello again, not been too good over the last few days…nice pics from Lightswitch and Pat…not often you see daylight under the front wheels, imagine the strain on the transmission.
I’ve got a box of pics which are all odd sizes, mostly press pictures etc,so to give you all a rest from my stuff have a look at these for a change.
Theres nothing wrote on the back of this pic to say what MSA it is,now between us all we’ve a few million miles under our belts so anybody know where this is?
Cheers a poorly Bubbs,
