Evening Mr Bilko
I don’t see Paul or Geoff very much as I have moved to the Middle East now and not been on the road since 1998
I did see Paul on Saturday just gone as he came to my evening wedding reception. I also saw Paul’s brother Tony who is now back working for NFT at Whitefield. He use to work on Tesco’s at Middleton until it closed and moved to that new Stobart warehouse in Widnes. Tony said the drop in pay was not worth the hassle.
Paul is doing very well I am pleased to say.
I don’t think our paths crossed
I was at Hinchliffes around 86 for about 2 years
Sheldon’s, gosh I remember them
When I left school at 16, I got a job in the garage at Dewsbury haulage on Tile Street in Bury. I was allowed to shunt motors around and I was in my element.
The job at Hinchliffes was a dream come true. The tankers were unbelievable. Stobarts was the easiest job I have ever done, but the money was crap. Working on the airport was good as I love planes LOL
G/Evening pilot.
Good to hear from you, glad to here you are doing well. Paul is the type of guy who will always do well sound man.I used to marvel how well he kept his motors, spotless inside and out despite being in and out of waste paper mills[not the cleanest places]
regards dave.

Hi again, great pics Pat…I wonder where the church is too, trouble is most of them look the sameERFs today.
Some of these firms are history now.
Cheers Bubbs,
I think that this motor is one of the ones W H Malcolm inherited when they bought out Wilfred Holden. Unusual to see a Malcolm motor with an English reg!
I had a D reg 1986 Foden 4 x 2 with Gardner 320, it wasnt the fastest at around 62mph ,pushing it at 65mph but it could pull, the geraring was spot on

The rigids were Haulmasters and units were Fleetmasters i think but i could be wrong. We had Haulmasters & Fleetmasters tractor units at BRS, IIRC the Fleetmaster had a one piece windscreen and the Haulmaster had a two piece screen. I don’t know what other differences there was I done my best to keep away from them !
Is that Richard Nuttalls Dave??, I remember them with a 6 wheeler Leyland Retriever ergo cab and a few ERFs a 6 wheeler and mostly 8s

Hello again,Fodens today…a bit of a treat for the “older” lads…heres a few from my pal Adrian Cypher, the first few were taken on the A4 before the M4 was built…all shot through the windscreen of his old Austin…he’s parked in the lay-by opposite the old Ridgeway cafe (who remembers that) near Marlborough.
Look where the headboard starts on this one.
One very rare Foden.
Loaded all on the bed,a real lorry.
One for Muckaway at the end.
Cheers Bubbs,
Good pics of proper lorries Marcus! I remember the Harveys TwinLoad very clearly as it used to come through Reading on a regular basis, had the MK V11 stroker in it I guess judging by the front grille vent’s. Harveys also had a 3 wheeled Scammell Townsman artic that did the same journey at times (Bristol-London and back) which was possibly a longer trip than Scammell’s had envisaged when they constructed it!!
Also used to call at the Ridgeway with my old man on our journey’s to and from Avonmouth Docks in the 60’s, I THINK that it may still be operating, maybe someone can confirm this?
Pete.

Onward and Upward maybe?
Cream Job
Them lads certainly earned their dough running up bakers steps. From the registration number it could be Soya flour
May seem a stupid question but was the trailer on this truck on a fifth wheel? As it looks a bit odd

Your right there it does, think it maybe a close coupled trailer.
Trent Wharfage is a blast from the past,I remember their Gainsborough based wagons well. IIRC VP Wines and Coalmoor Refractories ran those twin load Fodens as well in the 70s.

Blimey never seen anything like that, so it is more or less a fifth wheel.

The site of the Ridgeway cafe is now a small car park for people using the Ridgeway walking path which crosses the A4 at that point. Adrians lay-by
is still there.

If my memory serves me correctly it was Foden’s means of using the proposed 32 ton limit, it didn’t catch on but I thought that it seemed a sensible set up and a brave experiment for the manufacturer. Trailer length would have been restricted though, but at least you could have left the trailer at the first drop to be unloaded while you took the rigid to point B. It may get reinvented “one day”?
Thank’s for the info on the Ridgeway cafe Phil.
Pete.
