Scrapbook Memories (Part 1)

They were still using Steyrs last year in Switzerland.

This Austrian built Stery 19S31 6x2 tractor unit Reg No J840 CNW was originally supplied new in 1991 to Brieley & Sons International of Brighouse by local Steyr agents Premier Commercials of Ossett West Yorkshire.
Fitted with an Eaton twin-splitter gearbox, lifting rear axle and high top sleeper cab it was purchased second hand by Ken Harvey who ran it for a number of years.

Hey paul.
Some great pics there mate.I worked for kenny during the time he had the styer, paul barber was the main driver and although it looked a bit strange at first he reckoned it pulled well and there was a surprising amout of room inside it.Sadly it came to grief one sunday afternoon when paul was cut up by a car whilst carrying a load of reels [stood up]thro.folkstone to catch ferry to boulogne, swerved and turned the lot over.

regards dave.

Never driven a Steyr but had a good look at some. CSAD in the late Czechoslovakia bought quite a few of them in 1990-91; they were near-western trucks for near-eastern money.
They’d got few outdated features, like floor-mounted pedals, so at higher speeds driver got cold wind blowing at his ankles and up his trousers  Thanks to high roof the cab was very spacious and any two-men team that upgraded from Liaz felt like in heaven.
They also pulled well, though the fuel consumption was bit on the high side. Build quality was good and the rust did not like them.
And there was another advantage: Austrian cops hardly ever stopped you, assuming you were Austrian  On the other hand, driving a Liaz you were stopped every so often.
There was an O/D in a village near where I lived, he had a Steyr (19S36?) with tilt trailer, did Germany-Czechoslovakia-Greece with it for couple of years and then interesting round trips for another spedition: Italy-Russia-Netherlands-Italy.
And I also remember myself handballing a load of floor tiles that a Steyr tractor brought from Italy to the new church that was then being built in our town - while the drivers slept in the cab

Now you mention it I recognise the reg number, although it was Chris Brearley International to be pedantic

I remember when they were trying to flog those, a batch IIRC, there was much sniggering when CBI bought some - he didn’t really have the last laugh however cheap he got them for

Had one of those once on demo it resembled a conservatory. It would never be allowed now with the HSSE culture because of to many sharpe edges
The nice salesman put me off when he said there the in the same group as puch and I kept thinking of my ■■■■■■■ maxi moped and how I used to push that every where and gave it a miss

I`ll never laugh at another Hino again.

hi, anymore pics of HAROLD READ of Longhope Glos.
cheers daibootsy,

Never had a play in one of these, but always fancied them - they looked a bit different from the norm, and engineering-wise, struck me as being an ‘Austrian ERF’ meaning (before some of you ignoramus start commenting) that’s a good thing

Can anybody remember the name of that Austrian company who had a big fleet of Steyrs in the 70/80’s who I think were from Wells in Austria. The had a very distinctive livery of orange and green and were very often seen in Dover and L.I.F.T. A lot of their vehicles were on contract to Puch motor cycles which was also written in the side of their trailers.

r slicker:
we had 2 of them at chambers and cook. bubble drove 1 of them and i think johnny mack the other though stand to be corrected on the 2nd could have been victor also ■■?

Don’t remember Johnny Mack having a Steyr, but I may be wrong, but I do remember The foden he had. some pics of that would be nice.

Just a foot note which no one has picked up on.
The above vehicle was quite a rare machine as it was a 6x2
The lifting rear axle was completely rebuilt by Ken Harvey himself before he put it back on the road

You most likely mean Frikus, they are still about and still in their orange&green, though they run Mercedeses now. And they are based in Graz area, few kms down the A9 towards Slovenia. (Puch is a Graz company too)
They’ve had a branch in Kecskemet,HU, since early 1990s and another one in Koper, SLO, for few years now; so may have seen their trucks on non-austrian plates too.

Hello again, good feedback and pics of the Steyrs…magic stuff,Daibootsie…Johns put some nice pics of Harold Reads for you,I’ll put some of mine on another day…ok.
Right lets have a few from our friends in Ireland.

The last pic was taken from the passenger seat of my mates Sed/Atk 200,the 112 is southbound on the A38 near Plymouth, mid 80s but I remember it was taken between Xmas and new year…another sad anorak piece of useless drivel :unamused:

Cheers Bubbs,
