Nice to see some Steyrs. There weren’t many of us that had them. Heres mine.
so what was it like then ?
Hiya Glenman.
I’m probably biased, having spent my money on it (nobody wants to admit to getting it wrong!), but to be honest, it was a good truck.
I was looking for a replacement for an ERF, and the ‘local’ dealer was having an open day. I took one out on a test-drive, decided I liked it,
and then went back to the dealership to talk money. It was such a good deal, I figured that whatever its eventual resale value might be, I
could make decent profit with it,
I used it mainly on Greek and Italian work, as well as boxes out of Felixstowe.
Powerwise, it was adequate going over the mountains, bearing in mind that although a 310, that was comparable with most ‘regular’ trucks
of the time. Fuel use was reasonable- between 7 and 8.5mpg per trip.
The cab was ‘interesting’! You either loved or loathed it. Some might say spartan, i’d say functional. Again, it fulfilled all my requirements,
although the bottom bunk was far too narrow for a good night’s sleep. However, the top bunk was exceptional (once you got up there).
Mechanically, it was typically Germanic: - solid and reliable, and relatively easy to work on. MAN provided back-up in the UK, and they were
pretty good on the odd occassion that I needed help. The only problem I can recall was a regular fracturing of an air-pipe which ran along the
back of the battery-box. Once i’d obtained a length of flexi-pipe, it was a 10min job to replace it.

Can anybody remember the name of that Austrian company who had a big fleet of Steyrs in the 70/80’s who I think were from Wells in Austria. The had a very distinctive livery of orange and green and were very often seen in Dover and L.I.F.T. A lot of their vehicles were on contract to Puch motor cycles which was also written in the side of their trailers. You most likely mean Frikus, they are still about and still in their orange&green, though they run Mercedeses now. And they are based in Graz area, few kms down the A9 towards Slovenia. (Puch is a Graz company too)
They’ve had a branch in Kecskemet,HU, since early 1990s and another one in Koper, SLO, for few years now; so may have seen their trucks on non-austrian plates too.
Many thanks HomoFaber and whiplash, yes it was Frikus from Graz who I was trying to think of although I have not seen one of theirs for over twenty years. I have just had a Google and looked at their website which shows that they did have Steyrs.

It certainly drew attention with its quirky shape. I’d not had it long, when I was parked at Whitwood Truckstop, waiting for a load the following day out of Bradford.
TRUCK Magazine were conducting a road test from there of a Mercedes (can’t remember what model), and had seen my truck parked-up. Eventually, they came over for a chat, and to see if I wanted to take the Merc for a spin, but they were more interested in my Steyr, it being an oddity at the time.
It also used to get some enquiring looks from the public, again possibly because of its odd shape, but also probably because of the colour - olive green - which gave it an almost military look.
Hiya, good feedback again with the Steyr…great shot inside the cab Paul,Right so we’ve had the Austrians effort now lets see what the Spanish have to offer…I must say all I heard about these things would’nt get past Trucknets censors
Pigsassoles!!
Anybody have or drove one of these then?
Cheers Bubbs,
W & J Riding had a Seddon-Atkinson 401 which had a Pegaso engine fitted by the factory in it. It was a very good puller and apparently very quick.
It’s fleet name was ‘El Capitano’ - a hint to the origins of the power plant.
African bush truck built on an old Bristol bus chassis with a five pot Gardner engine. The ultimate in air conditioning but nowhere to keep the sandwiches.
Came across this one in Bulgaria. Looks a bit homebuilt.
Phil.
