Hey,great pics Pat,heres a question for you mate, the 2 143s I put in my last post…how much do you think trucks like that would fetch in price?..I know you can only guess, surely their value is increasing nowadays, they’re becoming a collectors item now.
Bubbs,
Hi Bubbs
The truth is I don’t really know the answer but realistically they are only worth what someone is prepared to pay but here is one on Ebay they are asking £15.000 for;
Hi again, hey Pat that “L” reg one is tidy mate, have you considered restoring it yourself…it wouldnt take much…imagine it in the old fleet colours and the roof spoiler put back on…nice!..you could do it up in your sleep.
Right then, this is the final foriegn look as I’m sure that everyone wants me to go back to the scrapbooks original set up…ok last Thursday it ■■■■■■ down at the Kramer container terminal at Rotterdam…

Hiya …not many british trucks on their roads, …nice work Bubbs your a star.
John
Hi John,I was pleasently surprised to see several Brits over in Holland. …1000s and 1000s of east europeans, the place is saturated with them
Heres a few flying the flag.
Looks like you have been busy over there and proves that its not only Manchester were it pours down with rain.
Was it a “Long Haul”
Regards Paul
Hiya Moomooland congratulations on the great site you have created!! Keeps me riveted for hours!!! I read the bit about Alf Sutton scrapping the motors that he replaced and not selling them on!! can you really see the Great Alf turning down “good brass” and taking scrap price? no and neither can I !!! Here’s a shot of an ex Sutton 4 wheeler flat that we put into service in 73/74 I was told it had been based at the Midlands depot.I paid a lot more than scrap price!!! and it was a well maintained lightly worked motor----smooth as silk from memory!!! Keep up the good work regards Bewick.
Pretty looking lorry that Atki! Now would this be a ‘Mark 1’ or a ‘Mark 2 Raider’? I’m confused as I thought a Mark 2 had the fiberglass radiator surround & Mark 1 did not? The year (67) & twin headlights would suggest Mark 2?
My Uncle is restoring an ex Marley Tiles Mark 1 4-wheeler like the one in your photo. His was first registered in 1960, it has single headlights, & an ‘old-style’ built-up radiator. His has a 5-pot Gardner (100hp?) what was in yours?
Apologies for all the questions! Best regards, Andrew
It’s a Mark 1 Andrew. It has the ‘real’ radiator you describe. The Mark 2 Atkinson was launched in 1968 and (as you rightly pointed out) had a glass-fibre radiator surround.
I think (from recollection of Dennis’s earlier description) it had a Gardner 6LW, 5-speed David Brown gearbox and an Eaton two-speed axle. Dennis will be along soon with corrections if that’s wrong.
With regard to the Mark 2 Raider, Atkinson never actually listed it as an official model in the range although there are several examples in preservation carrying various nameplates on the same theme.

Hiya Marky & Andrew first off I never knew the 4 wheeler was called a “Raider”! you learn summat every day! The Bewick Atki was a Mk 1 1968 reg. and from memory was 5 yeras old when I bought it.The spec was 6LW/DB6spd/Eaton single spd.& 24 ft. all alloy flat.I’ll put a shot on of the day we got it and still in Sutton livery.I’ve put the Sutton pic on with Bewick pic.
As far as I know Dennis (& I have 240 as a back-up for this as he told me and his anorak is a lot better than mine…) the Mark 2 four wheeler wasn’t officially known as a Raider. At least, not in the same way as Borderer, Searcher, Defender and Venturer were used as official model names.

Thanks for the info Bewick & Marky.
6LW (120hp?) & a 2-Speed, that must have made it a pretty ‘lively’ lorry!
We are looking at options for making my Uncle’s a bit more spritely on the road, apparently there was an overdrive version of the DB gearbox, maybe also look into a higher ratio diff.

I think your anorak is fairly substantial, Mark! Yes, ‘Raider’ was the name that Frank Whalley coined for the post-1970 4-wheeler, but he did tell me that no badges were ever commissioned for them as the model was built only to order. The name does not seem to have been applied to any contemporary brochure, spec sheet, price list or press release, and neither does it seem to have been in use at the works.
I’ve just had a look at the CM article about the 8LXB-engined 4x2 rigid built for Latham’s - no model badge on the grille, and no mention in the article at all.

Next time perhaps a few cuttings…if thats ok.
Cheers Bubbs,
Certainly looks like the tail is wagging the dog to me
I used to work with Jan Dohmen a little, a proper family firm and the drivers were treated like members of the family, coffee and cakes in the back kitchen
Pat. I recognise this company livery but just cannot remember the name, any idea?
