Anyone any idea what this is and when/where it may have been taken?
marky:
As far as I know Dennis (& I have 240 as a back-up for this as he told me and his anorak is a lot better than mine…) the Mark 2 four wheeler wasn’t officially known as a Raider. At least, not in the same way as Borderer, Searcher, Defender and Venturer were used as official model names.
Hiya “marky” yea I’ve heard of the the four model names you quote (we ran about 20 Borderers) so I will erase the name “Raider” from the old memory!!!Dennis.
Hi
Its a Leyland Martian of Sparshatts so probably somewhere in the south if my memory is correct she worked out of the Portsmouth area but someone must know for sure
There was certainly a Sparshatts in Sittingbourne when I was working down that way, Merc dealer as I recall.
I thought there was one in Dartford aswell
YOu are both right, Sparshatts are in Kent with dealerships at Sittingbourne, Dartford, Ashford and Tunbridge Wells, prior to 1974 they were dealers for British Trucks across the Southeast with the head office in Portsmouth.
Hello once more,I’ve been through the cuttings box and to be honest there was nothing of real interest,I want to keep the thread going so heres some of my old pics…I aint no Peter Davies or Arthur Ingram(the best lorry photographers) but I had a go…perhaps some of you will remember these old Scanias
Hope these are of interest.
Cheers Bubbs,
They’re always of interest Bubbs, especially the blue and white scanny 143-500, tipper with scrap on, of i think was Appletons of Wolverhampton.
They’re lorries always had different names. the one i always remembered was " ocean pacific " for some reason. Think Appletons are just white Volvo FHs & FMs with a red stripe now, where’s all the character gone…
A few shots I found. The b&w ones were not taken by me - they were given to me on my 9th birthday at the Drag racing vent in York in 1981, so I can’t credit the photographers.
The Wardle vehicle is an ERF with a Mack grill which was parked near my home in Thelwall, Warrington. I later saw it painted red. Id like to know more about Wardle’s and this truck especially. There’s still a plant hire firm at Appleton Thorn near their old depot called Wardles. (or is this truck “Wardell” ?)
I can’t recall taking the Volvo wrecker but I think they’re my photos. My uncle was involved in heavy recovery so i may have gone somewhere with him.
Tim
Hi again, nice pics Tim,heres a few of my Foden pics…
Hope the are ok.
Cheers Bubbs,
that stowell 8 wheeler a few a pics above,is it a s80 ? ,anyway were those massive headlights any better than more normal ones or were they that poor they had to be extra large ?

Hello then, thanks Dave, just wish I had more pics from up your wayHow about a mixture for a change
Hope these are ok.
Cheers Bubbs.
I remember the smiths 8 wheel Foden. It was a cancelled order which was why the tipper body was different to all their other trucks of the period. It didnt stay many years in comparrison to other Foden 4000s as it was too heavy (only carried about 18 tons). The reference to the 4000th 4000 series was a 6 not 8 wheeler, G160 BLM. Bloody smashing lorry; had a plaque in the cab saying 4000th 4000. They sold it in 2004 and bought my current motor, Foden Alpha 6 wheeler.

A H Gore - that takes me back! I used to sub work to them from the north west, in the mid to late 80s - they’ve been closed down for some time now, haven’t they?
Like the Atki too - a very sophisticated sleeper conversion, actually with an extended roof!!
