Hello Chris. I used to fuel up in Stamps yard about 1975 when I was working on contract to Esso in the docks. I think it is the Chep pallet depot now. What was the workshop is where they mend the broken pallets.
Phil 43 years on tankers. Someone has explained to me what a rope is now.
Could some-one nip round to Bubble.s house, and get him sorted out with his pc.
There is one thing for sure, he could not have had a better stand-in while he,s been AWOL than Phil Numbum, whose contributions are TopClass.
. Keep it up Phil. It looks like we could be heading for another 118 pages of Golden Memories.
I never took any pictures. I couldn,t afford a camera I used to spend all my spare money on Booze and the Horses

He could have a problem logging on,he did complain about it last week. Quite a few truck- net members seem to have the same problem.
Cheers Dave.
The earliest of these Leyland photos date from 1982. I was not supposed to carry a camera in a petrol tanker but managed to take a few when I checked that no one was watching.
CHEERS PHIL.
Nice photos Phil and glad you know what a rope is after all this time
You will remember Butlers somewhere in Bristol and I went there just the once about 1970 with some product from BSC Chemicals at Orgreave Sheffield.I can’t recall where their place was and I wondered if they were still going, could they have been tar refiners?
Chris
Chris,
Butlers tar distillery was started by Brunel to make creosote for railway sleepers. I started there in 1965 when the gas board had bought a share and it was called Bristol & West Tar Distillers. Before I left in 1978 it had been taken over again by The British Steel Corporation. The place closed down in 1981.
The works were on the river Avon at Crews Hole reached by a narrow road with a few bad bends in it. The ground was so contaminated by tar and oils
that I caught it on fire when cutting up an old AEC. The whole area was covered with about six feet of earth and houses built on it but nobody is allowed to dig any holes in the garden.
Phil.

Hi Phil, aye we’ve had this conversation before and I forgot that Butlers became Bristol and West TD and then BSC.The tar would be from Llanwern or S.Wales coking plants then? Sorry if I’ve asked this before.
There’s plenty of contaminated ground around Sheffield/Rotherham/Chesterfield where the old coking plants were…
Chris
I remember Geordie Blacketts tippers from Forest Hall, I lived near by so saw them regularly, a busy little company with a mixed fleet, although this mark wasn’t one of my favourite’s its a nice pic all the same. Franky.
Chris,
In the later days you rightly said the crude tar came from Llanwern and Port Talbot, we also used to collect from Corby sometimes. In the early days it all came from local gasworks hence the gas board having a share in the firm.
Phil.
The Marathon, XLO 61S …ME spec coupled to the Chris Hudson trailer in the above post was an owner driver from London area, I real good character, cant remember his name…
He had a Cadillac that he run around in, big posh car not a banger !

Did I ever mention I used to be a member of the Scammell Spotters Club? It was run for kids by the Leyland Journal and the Old Man signed me up! I think I’m the last remaining member…
Somewhere in the attic I’ve got a pic of Mike Lawrence’s Mack with the famous ‘Evening Star’ on the back, being delivered to the West Somerset Railway in about 1989. When the weather cools down a bit I’ll have a root about up there.
Please keep up the good work all.

hiya,
When i drove an 80 Marc, i was never short of matches to light the Woodbines, other drivers used to toss boxes of the things at me when being overtaken and that was everybody, what a pill that was enough to put you off haulage forever, although it would have made a tidy 4 or 6 wheeled rigid, but they was never a 32 tonner.
thanks harry long retired.I know what you mean Harry,we had a bloody yard full of the damned things.Mind you the cab lights and heaters were ok .
I used to scout round the yard to see if there was a demo of another make lurking anywhere to take on trunk.
My first lorry was a scania 81. dad ran it as an artic until he had a 111 then he stretched the 81 and made it into a 4 wheel tipper. i had it for 4 years and would have it back today if i could. nothing else could keep up with it round our way!
