Scrapbook Memories (Part 1)

hi
I may be wrong but i think all updates were fitted with 240 Gardners

Even if it had been a 6LW I bet Dr. John would have been able to make it cope at any weight.

Defo Deisels Perkins P 6s, Regards Larry.

I seem to remember there being an R6 as well Larry, what was the difference do you know  and what was the R6 fitted in.

they were fitted in the s type bedford in the early 50s

The difference between the P 6 & The R 6 Was dissaster , the P6 in my opinion was the far better engine, The R6 had allsorts of problems, mainley with timing going haywire & chopping the crankshaft up, oh dear what a headache, plus gasket bother, a cousin of mine had one in an S Type Bedford, He swaped it for a Leyland Comet Engine, Regards Larry.

As Larry says, they had a Perkins in them but a six cylinder sidevalve petrol was also available. My old quarry used to run them (before my time though!) I will post a pic or two when my neighbour lets me borrow the prints so that I can scan them.

Pete.

I read on a regular basis a truck mag that will bring back memories for most of you.
In this month’s edition of Vintage Roadscene, inside the back cover are some mpics of the parrott nose Dodges, running for a firm called “Tarslag”,from Stockton on Tees.
Apparently if the truck had a Perkins badge on the front, then it had a Perkins in it.No badge could mean it had the alternative slant six petrol engine.
Also shown are some alledged women drivers!

Too right he would - and he did

Chris has been subjected to this in reality, as well as having had his own motor ‘fettled’ by Dr. Killingbeck.

Hello lads, heres some old E.R.Fs for today

Cheers Bubbs,

Hi Larry
When I left school a little while age  my first job was with a Bedford main dealer, I didn’t stay there to long as it was a crap place and bad money, soon found out in those days it wasn’t the trade to be in. Anyway a lot of the Bedfords had the P6 in, I had heard fitters on about the R6 but don’t think we had any come in there, the only other engine fitted if not a Bedford or P6 seemed to be the Leyland. So apart from the problems you have said with the R6, was it a more powerful engine? what would be the reason to spec an R6 rather than a P6.
cheers
John.

I trained/passed first time with them November 2000; I equalled my instructors lowest number of minor faults for a trainee (4) :grimacing:
I think the owner retired and sold out, as I remember Clearstone Training wagons around West Oxon for a short time; I as told they went bust and most of the Oxfordshire training seems to be done by Valley Solutions.

Can remember when Spurlings had a yard in Swindon, coincided with the opening of the Honda plant.
Think Bert Carvey(ex JWQ)was running the show at the time?
Looks like a couple of Bob Eddolls Scanias behind the ERFs.

The Volvo’s were owned by Linley haulage in Hull, photos were taken down Wiltshire Rd off Hessle Rd. It was run by three partners until it was split up. The Volvo was A970 PRH and was ex starcarr from bransburton and the little Merc was D970JRH. The 88 was ex TB Lunn M…RBT. Hope it’s a start. Mark

Bloody hell Suedhead that’s a blast from the past… Bob Eddolls… is he still about  bit of a legend for a few different reasons,  I first met Bob when I was 15 ( a couple of years ago!!! ) I was working at Cirencester Garage and Bob was driving for Hintons of Southrop, then he bought a coal business, then went into haulage, that can only be decribed as big time in those days. The last time I saw Bob was in the waiting room of Cirencester Magistrates Court about 30 years ago, we spent a lot of time in there with anything that had wheels and a gearbox  I will send you pm mate you must know a few from your way that I would have known years ago, and would love to know what happened to them.
cheers
John.

Bob Eddolls, is that as in Eddolls of Cricklade, operator of blinged up Hinos (snigger snigger  )

Bob Eddolls is very much alive, trading as “Eddolls International” :unamused:

I think its one of the sons, Shane?
Cant recall Bob running tippers but looking at the hydraulic tank on the back of the l/h Scania , he might have done a bit of bulker work, out of Coopers metal- now EMR?

Altitude, Suedehead beat me to it, Eddolls international. I would guess Eddolls with the tippers (maroon cabs, with black tippers) are related. Some say “Shane Eddolls” on them; I think they do a lot for the Red Arrows lot

The R6 engine was only used for around a 2 year period in the Dodge Kews(parrot nose) during the very late 50s… sadly it would throw a con-rod, if you changed down going down hill. Worth noting is there is very little history concerning the R6! The 6.354 restored the Company’s image following the R6 messup and provided the foundation for future growth through the 1960s.The company I served my time with as a mechanic were still running about 10 of this model when I started there in 1962 but they all had the P6 engine in them and then the LAD cabbed Dodge’s they ran had the 6.354 and leyland 350/370 engines both cracking motors for the tipper work at the time. Both Tipits dad and my dad drove them for the same firm.
