Well this was in a sale in Lincs, I was after buying it, apart from the drivers side front wing missing it was in decent condition, wouldnt of taken too much time and money to restore, but I was outbid when it started to go silly money it went over the two grand,. I wish now I had kept the one I had for 7 years. HTS 952 G. Regards Larry.
That’s a better picture Larry, thanks for posting it. We’ve never been into restoring trucks but we’ve often said about several we’ve almost given away over the years wouldn’t have hurt left in the corner of the yard. No doubt a lot of people feel the same loking back.

Good to see that old Dodge tipper. My brother had one of those with a V8 in it, he thought it was the doggs doodaas. He passed away 15 years ago this month & we were talking about his lorry earlier wondering what he’d think if he could see what we use to do the job today.
A Hell drivers Parrot Noza, Great stuff, The were a great motor , I only drove one for about 4 hrs, Perky Engine 2 speed , that was just before it was sold. Regards Larry.
Were those Dodge Kews, petrol engined? I watched Hell Drivers for the first time earlier (save clips on YouTube) and watching them loading with overhead bins on the pull chain system got a “how bloody old are you?!” from the wife as I’ve loaded under that sort. I’m only 32 for Gods’ sake, Mrs!
Smiths Concretes’ plant at Hardwick should’ve been donated to English Heritage (along with Tuckwells plant)

Think they had a Perkins in them, a job to remember that far back
Altitude; Whatever those Hawletts Dodges had under the bonnet sure pleased Callum. Little bugger was bouncing up and down watching the driving test (he missed the quarry crash, due to required rest period )
As Larry says, they had a Perkins in them but a six cylinder sidevalve petrol was also available. My old quarry used to run them (before my time though!) I will post a pic or two when my neighbour lets me borrow the prints so that I can scan them.

Good little lad staying within the law will make a future Smith’s driver.

Defo Deisels Perkins P 6s, Regards Larry.
Same engine as I had in my 1939 Packard 8 (originally a straight 8 petrol)
Converted by a Trent bus driver using the engine from a written off Derbyshire Stone 6 wheel tipper. Great engine, obviously hardly working, no fan it relied on ram air cooling only. Brilliant until I got into a London traffic jam going back to a week’s stint at Charlie Dormers in Leytonstone. Then it boiled.
I rember reading this when Killingbeck converted their Atki fleet to 38t in the 80s, I bet that the older Gardeners struggled a bit, a lot of their motors then were early 70s… guessing at 150 180■■
