The Mammoth Major Six Tractor was indeed fitted with the V8 designated 2VTG6R and dated 1968, the Mandator being VTG4R. There were reputed to be less than 10 of the V8 Mammoth Majors in service, so very rare. You might also notice the high datum cab fitted (before Leyland used them later) the gap left because of the higher cab was filled by the deep bumper and AEC were to fit these cabs to all models later but that never came about, instead Leyland used them and made a bit of a bodge job of the front end. My claim to fame when a young AEC apprentice was to change the cylinder head gaskets on the Mandator V8 which had came North for demo purposes but had over heated on the way up (well it is up hill!) a problem along with the injector pipes they also suffered badly from. Once the job was done a fitter and I (too young to drive it myself on the road, tch) took it down to Scotch Corner and back and it could shift. Once we returned and the engine was still okay it was sent home and we never saw it again. The rest is transport history as far as the V8 was concerned, dogged by problems because of the haste to put it into production before it was properly tested. It was a lovely motor though. Franky.
Those Cannon trailer curtains may be flameproof but can they cope with a spillage of MEK or Acetone, eh? eh?
I bet the six wheeler Bedford TK hauling logs was extremely underpowered

John
Hi,Bewick the Scania Vabis pic is from a Roadway (RHA house magazine) from 1966,although Hingleys reckon they have the first one and I dont doubt it its unlikly the one in the pic is as I would imagine a group of them came over together and that one was first off the boat

Thanks for that Bubbs the scania vabis seems to have entered the UK the year before the F86 as I remember the first operator of the Volvo was a timber haulier from Wark and it was an “E” reg '67 from memory as I remember it used to come down the A6 on its way to Ellesmere port loaded to the gunnels with Pulp wood ! A pal of mine ran an ex WH Malcolm LB76 for a while “F” reg from memory and it was I always thought a decent motor but in those days (71/72) the shape of the Scany was — how can I say— an aquired taste !! Cheers Bewick.

Hiya John obviously I can’t comment on the Alan Hingley 76 but I am trying to wrack my brain ( whats left of it ) as to the name of the Scania dealer in the west midlands was called ( before Chris Kelly became the foremost dealer in the UK )they had the dealership in Manchester also . My pal Jack Brady used to deal with them a lot as they ran quite a number of 110s in the 70s . Cheers Bewick.
Bewick,was the dealer B&W motors …I think.
Bubbs.
Hi, The Scania that A.Hingley has (LGK 3D) was the first in the country but not the first sold to a customer and put to work, it was still a demo. I think one of the first sold went to Partridge steel at Walsall E reg. LGK 3D was sold ex demo to Hudsons of Dudley,Who used it on heavy haulage for many years before it ended up at Hingleys. It had a slightly different engine to all the others DS10 not DS11 and had a dynamo which was later changed to alternator.
@ Bewick. The dealers were B&W motors (bradburn and wedge) in Wolverhampton and Hyde, I was a mechanic there for some years, in later years I drove one of the ex. Brady 110’s HEO 282G!

Thanks for that Bob … the yard your talking about if it’s the one at the bottom of Matthew St, I remember belonged to Beatwaste (with the yellow & blue Commer’s) before Chris Bennett had it.
Hi Tipit.Beatwaste if I am right in thinking was an offshoot belonging to E&F Beatties during the 60s,I think it was something to do with Powell Dufryn who took over Beatties.I also seem to remember that PD were one of the first to bring out the skip trucks, again during the 60s.(someone correct me if I am wrong)cheers
Hi Stanfield, it’s weird how one detail triggers another memory, I’d forgotten they did have the PD initials on the front corners. Now I’m begining to think their colours were White & Blue, did they go through a colour change at sometime ?
TIPIT:
Hiya Ray,
Talking about funny looking TK artics, do you remember those that use to travel along the A57 near Ardwick in the early 60’s.
They had something like a 6ft high dome fairing to blend into the van bodied trailers they pulled, I think the firm were called Kex and in dark blue & orange, don’t know where they were from though.Paul.
Hiya Paul, do indeed remember Kex. Think they were industrial cleaners, they used to deliver rags to garages etc. and take the dirty ones away for cleaning. Seem to remember that they called the rags K cloths, not to be confused with J cloths. They may have been from the Hyde area.
Beatties were part of the PD group and I also remember them changing their colours to blue and white. Beatties/Beatwaste garage was on the corner of Mathews street and Bennett street. Remember Beatwaste with a fleet of TKs and Commers. They even put a Commer cab on a TK chassis
At the railway end of Mathews street there was originally an Esso storage yard. I’ve been told that when Esso moved out Beatwaste moved into there, later to be taken over by Wimpey Waste.
Here’s a pic of Beatties Coal yard taken from Bennett street flats. Sent to me by Mike S
Have got a pic of the garage somewhere. If I can find it
Another memory has just been triggered. Remember Hancocks Waste Gobblers, were they blue and white
Ray
Hi Ray
Thomas Hancocks were based over nr Stretford during the 60s if my memory serve’s me right.Livery was brown & cream.
