this has to be the best thread on T,NET,pleae keep em coming guys brilliant,

Great photos Bubbs, where did you get that one of Alan Price & Sons Deutz. SVL 646R, had a sister 647R. There was another R reg OBO 57R, she had a splitter and at one time was the fastest in the fleet. Those trucks worked hard in them days, chasing all over the S.Wales valley’s carrying coal to blending sites and Newport docks.
If you could, would you please post it on Dave the Renegades Welsh Border Tippers site, he has been hanging out with Bewick and this will act as a sedative lol.
Thanks Paul

Hiya Chris,
remember those overheight Schreiber trailers very well, used to see them regular up and down Trafford Park road/Ashburton road. I was told that they were triple deckers.
From what I remember they were to high even for Motorway bridges.
Was sat in a cafe in T.park with several of our other drivers one day when one of Schreibers drivers came in. He told us that the overheight trailers used to go to Runcorn everyday, but he wouldn’t, (or couldn’t) tell us which way they went. So we were all in agreement what a Bulls…r.
They were still running a lot of TKs in the early 70s.

J B Carriers, another name from the past. in the early to mid 60s one of their drivers lived just up the road from where I was living. Used to call home in his lorry, another TK, some days he would have a 4 in line trailer and other days a tandem axle. Now that was a sight, a little TK with tandem axle trailer. Allways looked like the back axle of the trailer was not touching the ground when it was empty. Must have been a right struggle when it was loaded, or should that be over loaded

Ray

Hiya Ray,
Talking about funny looking TK artics, do you remember those that use to travel along the A57 near Ardwick in the early 60’s.
They had something like a 6ft high dome fairing to blend into the van bodied trailers they pulled, I think the firm were called Kex and in dark blue & orange, don’t know where they were from though.

Paul.

The Mammoth Major at the top of the page looks as though it has the V8 engine, there doesn’t appear to be much of an engine hump, did they put them in that lorry or is my Specsavers visit overdue?

Hi Bubbleman RE: XCG 601R the Anderson F88 is that a Scottish number do you think? I had XCG 600R which was an F89 but I bought it from Compton in Poole, I take it the 88 was new in this pic? I’ll try & put a picture of mine up when I get 5. Top thread by the way loads of interesting stuff you’ve got nice one mate.

Fly sheet

I think you are right about the AEC you could normaly tell a V8 by the placement of the air cleaner behind the left front wing also had a sort of walk through cab that engine was the forrunner of the 140 Scania AEC could not stop the injector pipes from cracking because the pump was mounted on the side of the engine those clever people at Scania mounted it in the v on top of the engine short injector pipes no cracks brilliant engine.

Hi Bubbleman good photo of Canonbury Asphalt bedford i worked for them when i was 18, they only had a small fleet of lorrys all bedford TK and KMs . so surprised to see a photo at all of one of thier motors. great thread thanks.

Hi Marc,
That Eastern Counties Farmers C reg, D series Ford, must have been one of the first one’s out,we had a C reg Thames Trader on S W Brisbanes who I drove for in the late 60’s,the first D series this way were on a D plate,we are a bit behind the times up this way.
Cheers Dave.

I thought so, it had all the signs of a V8, thought it was Mandator only though.

I know the rumours about Scania using the design for the DS14, thought they were just that though, rumours, didn’t they have a different displacement? Whatever, you’re right about the Scania V8, my favourite engine of all time, I’ve driven a few, owned a few, real money makers & so nice to drive, I was honoured to write the epitah for it in TRUCK magazine when it was superceeded by the 16 litre, I still maintain that a well set up 143-450 could run with todays big dogs, but that might be rose tinted specs, or Gardner syndrome as I prefer to call it

Hi
I dont know how many 60’ Carrimore trailers Econofreight ran but I delivered two new ones (topped) from Stanley down to Stockton,I rember pulling a tyre off the rim at Stanley turning them around in the factory.

Here is a pic from a 1971 Commercial Motor

An Econofreight Atki loading a 60’ Carrimore trailer with a Railcar from the Derby works of British Rail to deliver to the Royal Albert Docks in London destined for Borneo.

Hi Marc,
Great lot of pics again, the driver of that Scania certainly was lucky,to be alive, with that RSJ coming through the cab.
Cheers Dave.

Bloody hell, that is a name from the past. Beatwaste owned a landfill tip near me which took all Humber Kitchens rubbish. It was closed because of high methane levels, but it made a good off roading site :stuck_out_tongue:
