Pebbles 74:
Hello Marc,Brilliant selection of Volvos! Taunton Meat’s 88 & Stuart’s 86 in particular. Which publications would these shots have come from?
Do you know of any other AE Stuarts photographs? I have seen the 88 with the Parkhouse step-frame box on page 1 of the Devon thread - another gem.
Thanks again,
Andrew Stone
Hello Marc, keep it up. Pebbles 74 wants to know which publication the picture of Stuart’s 8 wheeler was from. Well Andrew, I remember Martin well, your uncle no doubt, first with a Bedford TK then the Seddon Atkinson 400 drawbar outfit. The 8 wheeler was pictured in Commercial Motor when it was new. I think it was to let the ministry know that Stuarts had bought a lorry that could run legally, for some reason they always found weighbridges embarrassing. The 8 wheeler replaced an F86 6 wheeler with a similar sized box, now that did take a brave man to drive it. The box from the 8 wheeler went on to an F7 and when Stuarts gave up it was sold to John Watts.
George Gill’s F86 pictured later was also in CM, they ran an article on the West Country in about 1978, including an interview with Jack Gregory, if I remember correctly, he said that he could not see his fleet expanding beyond the 30 0r so trucks he had, as he would loose control if it got any bigger!!!
By the way the Stuart’s F88 on page 1 is Roy’s origional double decker and was built by Drew Bros of Frampton Cotterell, the second one was I believe built in Exeter, possibly by Marsh Barton Coachworks, it was not untill he had the 3rd one that Roy went to Houghtons (Parkhouse) .
Regards Peter
Hi again,Leylands today.

John
Hello,great pics John,keep 'um coming mate…lets have a treat…Atkis
Hope these are ok.
Cheers Bubbs.
A good row of hooks on that John Raymond trailer
Just make sure you rope every hook lad!
I used the article on the Scammell to build a model, here’s my version although its the earlier Routeman. I noticed in the article the lad doing the restoration had fitted the rear markers the wrong way around, no doubt he was pulled on this by another eagle eyed sweat , has he swapped them now? As you see mine has done a bit work compared to his shiny steed. Franky.
Hello Peter,
Thanks for setting me straight on a few things! Yes, it was my Uncle Martin that drove for Stuarts.
I have sent you a PM.

Andrew Stone

They certainly are, thank you! I remember the sister to that Ferrymasters Mk.2 unit. The one in the pic is FBJ 14J but FBJ 13J ended up with Pandoro via Ferrymasters (Ireland). After working for a while as an MOT shunter, I last saw it as a yard shunter at Yeadon depot. If I remember rightly, it was 205 ■■■■■■■ plus 6-speed ZF.
Meanwhile the Pickford’s Venturer has worked on the fairs for many years, and is still at it!

I’d hazard a guess that the half-cab Foden VEW 81 languishing in Rush Green is an ex- St Ives Sand & Gravel motor.
How long ago was the pic taken and is she still there?
Cheers
Mark

John.
