Hi Marc, great stuff all around. Perhaps you can help with another pic of an early F86,this one belonged to Gullivers Truck Rental in Bristol, and was pictured with a bunch more possibly at Irving.

At one time, Volvo were using it in their advertising (perhaps when the F7 was current?) and I remember it having some terrific mileage. But weren’t they also proclaiming it as the first one in the U.K.? A D Boyes also have one described as the first in the U.K., but maybe it revolves around first sold, as opposed to first built or first registered, or something like that.

I know these things have/had a bit of a following but I never realised that they ventured across the channel for someone else’s delight (sic). Must have been some brave/clever/stupid salesman that exported the “Threpnybit”. I don’t ever remember seeing one ANYWHERE in left hand drive form or on foreign plates!
This truck has Murcia (Spain) number plates.

I drove one of those with a tipping body for a builder in 1967 aged 19/20,it wouldn’t pull your granny off the ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ four cylinder engine, one of the heaviest things on the steering that Ive driven, and that includes an AEC Matador wrecker.
Cheers Dave.

That Hutchinson pic answered a question for me about the date the F86 was introduced to the UK as I see it has an E reg (67), that’s quite early, I can’t remember the reg of the first one I saw as a youngster but must have been about 1968/69 when I was an apprentice fitter and can’t say it was trouble free, those early ones suffered from overheating and headgasket problems but at the time some drivers thought it was brilliant while others thought wagons like that would make them soft, power steering, comfortable seating and good heating not to mention synchro boxes and light braking. The Hutchinson motor is pulling another North East favourite the Target trailer made in Blyth by Arrow Construction, like pulling a section of bridge behind you! Franky.

Hi Dave

I also had the misfortune to drive one of these at about the same age as you did. What a load of rubbish :frowning: :frowning: it’s a wonder it didn’t put me off driving for life.

cheers

John.

Does anyone remember the name of a company out of Leicester in the mid 60 s that were the first in the region to use mercedes artics on bulk tipper haulage?.They came on the scene quickly with brand new equipment which turned a lot of heads as foreign trucks were few and far between at the time and artics were nt exactly common either on this kind of work.Their cabs were white in colour if I can remember correctly . The company disappeared a couple of years later probably bought out by another carrier. They carried coal and quarry products.

Hello again, those old 86s went well, sod it lets have another dose, first pic is for Pauljohn…I think this is the pic he’s after,86 no1,no5,000,no10,000 and no 15,000.

Heres no1 again.

The last one is for Pebbles…not a Stuarts, but close by

Cheers Bubbs.

Bubbs, thankyou that is the shot I was looking for. Gulliver’s have some great photo’s of vehicles from their rental fleet over the years.
When they started the transport division, they carried the logo over to their Grey and Adams reefers. They were really smart.
cheers Paul

Marc,

Thanks for that one! As you say, not a million miles away. There were a lot of them about when you think back.

This is a photo of my Father’s 86, the only Volvo that we ran & also the only 8 wheeler.

The registration was ‘UGA’ on an S plate, making it first registered in Glasgow traffic area, 1977-78. It came to us second-hand, if I remember correctly the cab was originally a cream colour with the chassis being red. We repainted the cab & made the ‘Greedy Boards’. I would be interested to know if anybody can remember / work out who would have had it first?

Thanks again,

Andrew
