Malc, weren’t Watts Bros something to do with Richard Hodgsons at Beverley. I went there once from Saltend with vinyl acetate and I thought maybe Watts were their hauliers.

Watts first sold up to British Fuels Ltd who were co-owned by The National Coal Board and Amalgamated Anthracite Holdings Ltd. In 1986 they were hived off with other non fuel concerns under the umbrella of AAH Ltd, was that then taken over by Baylis Distribution?

That was probably all it was Chris, just local hauliers, to Hodgson Tannery which later became Hodgsons Chemicals. Do you remember Bartoline in Beverley. I remember transhipping their drums as a schoolkid in the haulage yard where I spent every spare waking hour.

The drivers would load from Watts and come back to the yard and I would load them into a Seawheel drum carrier for next day delivery, a sort of bonus for the boss as he was paid twice to go to Lancashire and reload it for export

I forgot about AAH until I remembered this.

Onward and Upward Ltd :stuck_out_tongue:

Thats a very interesting article, I have not seen that before

Yes,Malc I remember Bartoline.I went just the once with 500 galls of some spirit from the NCB refinery and it was all drummed off.
Going back to Hodgsons,I had an AEC MK5 at the time and it was uprated to 26t from 24t. I could then legally carry 4000 galls of vinyl acetate which I loaded at Saltend for Hodgsons and promptly broke a spring as I wrestled with the non-power steering to get the bloody thing on the weighbridge. I had the spring strapped up down Hedon Road, near Wakes yard, can’t recall the name of the firm. Was I glad to get that load off,I was used to heavy steering but that extra two tons was too much.
And AAH,I remember seeing their logo on tippers, and that was a really interesting piece of info about Watts and Onward Transport.

Was it Sellers and Batty who were the AEC agents up Hedon Road?

he has had a number of people look at his computer and they cant solve the problem so it could be terminal

If its getting as far as the desktop screensaver, its not terminal. The pc is working and attempting to load Windows. Worst will be a OS reinstall. One thing though. I’m assuming that all these great pics are scanned onto it. If you decide all is lost, don’t just sling the computer. They are probably recoverable unless you have had a total hard drive failure which it doesn’t sound like.

What operating system is it?

Before my time Chris or at least it didn’t register. Not sure about Sellers and Batty though, they were Peterborough based and I don’t remember them being in the area until the 80s

I live and learn daily though

Well done Flatman some great old pictures there.

Marcus could be back on by the weekend

I hope so because my carrier pigeon is getting tired of flying between Manchester and Bristol everyday

Paul Anderson Northwest Trucks

Wow! Another load of excellent stuff.
Thanks nianiamh for reviving memories of my old acquaintance Arthur Duckett from Highbridge. To say he was (still is, I hope), a bit of a character is the understatement of the year.
He had all sorts of interesting motors at different times, including the Rowe Hillmaster in the first pic. He had several of those big Russian motors on a tipper contract back in the 1970s - maybe it was the M5 job? - and fell out with Somerset County Council over getting them registered. His response to the problem was to use one of the Russkies to dump a load of ■■■■■■■■ across the entrance to the motor taxation department!
Last time I went to see him he was running a wildlife park at ‘Alstone Hall’ with a home-made brown sign to it featuring a picture of an elephant. I think that was an exaggeration but he did have a very friendly baby camel!

Hello Chris
the photo is from a sales brochure, the tankers are loading liquid pitch direct from a ship at I think Port Talbot.
Shorts had a depot at The Docks Main Road, Port Talbot. situated on Steel Works Wharf.

Sorry flatman001 - got confused trying to catch up with all the posts. Didn’t mean to offend.
I don’t live in England but when I do a Blighty run I always go to Vision Express.
