Scrapbook Memories (Part 1)

Hi once more, some old Sed/Atks today.

Another fine slice of nostalgia Marc, thank you

The machine on the back of this trailer is the sole surviving Atkinson steam wagon.

Interesting to see the Atkinson name on that W&J Riding unit - there can’t have been too many badged like that.

That’s how Tom Riding used to badge his 400s - they mostly had a Big A as well.

You’ve done it again Bubbs… I’ve been asking on the South Wales thread for some of Alte Xpress and you’ve come up with one, good stuff.

I also work for Wilkinson, had a SA 400 290 ■■■■■■■ very, very quick indeed.

bubbleman:
Hello again,I liked Richards play on words…TA MARC…very good,Lovesponge another A-One coming up.

One for McD at the end

Cheers Bubbs.

Hi sorry I don’t know how to isolate the pics so have to waste space putting them all back on
Who amongst the old fogey’s on here ( sorry the more experienced!) can remember the cafe that Taunton meat Maggie (almost certainly one of their ripped off OD’s) is pulling out of?
Gavin

Hi again . Regarding the post about what cafes are still trading.
Beacon Services at S.Mimms is now the truck stop at S. Mimms services IIRC the actual cafe was in the big red brick building between the diesel pumps and the car services.
4 Oaks on the A13 was still there a couple of years ago, but not as good as it was.
Jocks is still at Slough but they have narrowed the carpark entrance, I’m not sure if you can get in with a truck now. They probably realised that there is more profit in 20 builders vans carrying 5 workers than 5 artics carrying 5 drivers. Also the ‘old boy’ who used to jam you in at night so that you could all get out in the morning has to be long gone!
Carlisle Truck Inn was also still there a couple of years ago.
Avonmouth Truck Motel is now Avonmouth Truck stop.
Unlike me :unamused: I don’t think any of these places have improved with age!
Gavin

Marc,

Love it

Excellent clipping of the Comarts line up - knew you would find something sooner or later - thanks for posting it - top stuff as always.

Can you see any of the Reg No.s on the origanal ■■

(PS can you put it on the Comart thread)

Regards

Ant

More great stuff, I also remember Headlight.

I note on the previous page (rather then quote all the photos again) that DAF3300 shows a Foden in Slaters livery and then further down the page theres one in the cuttings too. Any more Slaters pics? In colour pref lol.

By the way DAF are those pics taken in Filey in the cliff top car park?

Hi all, nice to see some references to the old Headlight bits…I’ll include some pages later of the clearing houses that appeared in the back…that will stir up some memories.Gavin…I reckon the cafe the TMH Maggie is pulling out of is the Maidendown stage on the A38,just along the road from Morgans in Devon…if you look close behind the lorry you’ll see the letters E N D O which is part of maidendown…the ERF of Vallances helps to support this as they were regulars calling in for a pot of tea.
Cheers Bubbs.

This ERF with a Peterbuilt grille did it belong to an o/d carrying for R.H. Stevens.
I don’t think he improved the look much.

G’day Bubbs,
Nice to see the KM with a Detroit. There are still quite a few kicking around in NZ. 671 Jimmys with Road Rangers or with Alison autos.

This one belongs to an engineering mob who use it as a shunter for the tankers that they make. It’s a 1975 model and is still road legal, you can hear it coming a mile off.
Shell had a lot of these on tanker work.
Cheers Jamie

Thanks to Tipit and NZ Jamie for those pics…both interesting lorries…dunno about the ERF as a Peterbilt though. The KM looks a stunner ,you can imagine that screeming away.

A mixture today, one for Lonewolf to start with…sorry its not colour :frowning:

And now a look at the return load section of a Headlight magazine 30 years ago. :open_mouth:

Hope these bits are of interest.

Cheers Bubbs.

Good god its in Whitby dock! Cheers lol I just took a time travel trip.

Nice to see a Slaters truck as I did my HGV training with them when they were part of the Tilling Group. Also fond memories of the Tilcon S83 as we had loads of them at our quarry and they served us well.

Pete.

How many S83s did they have in total at Ballidon, Pete ?

I can only remember the odd one that had got sold to private contactors when me dad used to work out of there with Trumix on a S39 sixer. (When he was detailed to do so from Dove quarry)

There were a few Haulmasters, but sadly the memory’s really sketchy as he only used to go over there now and again.

Nice to see the photo of the JC merc, they had a depot in bow east london in the 70,s just off of old ford.I picked one of their trailers up in folkstone once,at the time i had a D1000 ford with a ■■■■■■■ v8.It was a flat trailer with 24 ton of chip board that had come over from ostend. My unit was only platedfor 28 ton so it was well over weight. The price for picking the trailer up and delivering it to london was £15 in 1973.I got to near ashford without getting in top gear an as i came round a bend there was some tractors cutting the hedge on my right but a caravan transporter coming the other way was on my side of the road to get by them.I braked hard but the brake chambers gave out on the trailer and i had no brakes,i pulled the dead man brake up which was just like a car handbrake on a D1000 but nothing so i went into the field on my nearside coming to rest about 30 yards in the field. The only damage was a broken indicater lens and the lorry was still upright.I had to wait for a tow truck to come out which was a diamond T from maidstone. After about 5 hrs they had towed me out of the field.I dropped the trailer in a near layby an went back to london solo. The next day i went into work an told my boss i was jacking in as i was fed up driving the ford over weight all the time,he took me out an bought me a nearly new F88.I stayed with him for 13 years untill he got out of transport.

Pass! I would guess Kelvin that there was around 20 or so S80 and 83’s including tippers and tankers split between Ballidon and Kevin quarries. At any one time we had around 50 trucks, mostly Foden S 39, S 40, S 80 and S 83 and then Haulmaster’s and S 10’s but with a few Sed Aks when Foden couldn’t supply chassis.
I used to repair the loading shovel at Dove Holes plant on occasion when I was fitting, there was a chap called Gordon in charge if my memory is correct!

Pete.

That’s correct mate, his name was Gordon Sleigh and he was the mixerman for the site.
When my dad worked at Dove, there were three S39s. One driven by my old man, the other two by Roger Hardman and Dave Stead.

You can make out one of the sixers loading at the plant in the background here and incidentally, the AEC is driven by Pat Mannion who used to service the Trumix plant with washed sand from ICI Tunstead and 20X5 limestone from Peakstone.

Hi Mark you are right it was Maidendown Stage you are obviously older than you look :unamused: :unamused:
As regards the backload section in Headlight how on earth could we have managed without it? I carried an old copy for years to try and backload a tilt when I got tipped ‘up north’. Anyone want any tips on who does and who does not pay
Gavin

hiya,
yes Gavin there was one or two shady characters in the backload fraternity, most paid but it was more of a case of when and what, i’ve had my earhole clipped a time or two for loading from dodgy sources, Headlight advertised a few duting it’s existence but for the most part “it got you home”.
thanks harry long retired.
