Scrapbook Memories (Part 1)

curnock:
i remember wild having a depot in altrincham on the a56 the rear of a garage, was this the same firm ?,i am sure it was !

Wilds of Altringham were called Wilds Motors I believe, and had a dark blue livery, were no connection to The Wild Group.

G’day fellas,
here you go he’s one of Maddern’s,taken by myself in Cullompton Devon, junction 28 of the M5,back in 1990. I used to see quite a few of Madderns about,I’ve some more photos of thier gear if anyone’s keen. Ineresting that you mension the name Tancock Ian,as I’m sure that Stoford transport, also from Cullompton were owned by the Tancock family,I wonder if they were related? Stoford ran a large fleet of yellow Sed Atkis in the eightys and ninetys, not sure if thier still running?
Cheers Jamie

Hi Stoford had a few depots, they packed up (went bust?) about 5/6 years ago.
Bryans come from somewhere near Torrington North Devon.

North Shropshire Transport, based in Gobowen were part of the wild group, and also remember going to Lloyds of Trafford park to collect loaded trailers and im sure they were in the group

Hi again, good stuff with the Wild/madderns/heavers thread, yep Jamie bung your pics on here mate…as Gavin said Stoford packed in a few years ago but the last lot of topline Scanias survive in their yellow colours and work for Gardners of Plymouth…and to add to the confusion of Bryan Haulage I always thought they lived out in the sticks near Okehampton.

Righto more today from the scrapped scrapbook. :unamused:

Hope these are ok.

Cheers Bubbs.

I found this site aout a month ago, and I’ve been waiting (patiently?) for confirmation of my registration. Finally, I thought I’d just try logging in and hey presto!
This thread is fantastic Bubbs, thank you indeed. My transport days were 69-75, so loads of memories for me here. You haven’t got any of John Stamper’s old Atkis have you? Was quite a big team in its time, mostly hauling steel from Ravenscraig and Ellerman boxes and with a sister company in Penrith. Haven’t seen many photos on the net though I’ve been looking.

How about this one?

It looks like one of W & J Riding’s sleeper conversions

Morning Bubbleman. Thanks for putting up the picture of Hirst & Phelps Mercedes tipper, my dad used to work for H & P when i was a a boy!! shame its not a colour photo as i thought their colours looked really nice ( Red & Grey ). This would have been one of the last H & P liveried lorries as soon after Alan Hirst & Robin Phelps parted company and set up separate businesses. Alan carried on as A & J Hirst and only packed it in a couple of years ago, his Merc & MAN tippers were a common sight all over the country. Many thanks for the memory. Rgds Mark.

Heres one of Alan Hirsts later MANs.

Hello again,A big welcome to Macdangerous and thanks to 240 for the pic, glad the pic of the merc did it for Mark.

more from me

Are Vectis tpt still about?

Cheers Bubbs.

great photos as usual bubbleman. best thing on the internet.is there any photos of cawthorn and sinclairs maggies in your crumbling scrap book? many thanks

Thanks for the welcome Bubbs - and for the photos, I’ve been spoiled already.

That Freightliner F86 was my dream, I started off at Freightliners with manky old ex-BR Seddons (and a few Big Js). The thought of having a Volvo was, well, pretty unrealistic.

And thanks for the Stampers photo 240, just perfect. Most of them had AO (carlisle) regies, not really sure why, and very few of them were sleepers. They had a Chinese Six as well, which was always great for putting the MD in his place since he’d spent a lot of money on it in anticipation of the new weight regs and got it all wrong. If you wanted to shut him up you just had to mention the ‘Steer’.

Happy days…

G’day,
here you go Bubbs mate another of Maddern’s,taken in Tiverton Devon,April 1991. Also some of Stoford’s,taken in thier Willand,Devon yard 90,91. A lot of thier Sed Atkis were quite old by the early 90s,these two were 400s with 401 grills, the day cab was the yard shunter, she copped it when a trailor jack knifed. When i was fifteen I did a weeks work experience with them as a fitter, not being able to do much of any use I used to get bored and wander over the road to a cold store where there were loads of trucks for me to take photos of. Neadless to say they didn’t offer me an apprenticeship, due to lack of motivation. The Merc was a bit of a loner, the fleet was pretty much all Sed Atkis,I think they had about 20 of 'em. Does anyone have any photos of thier later motors?
Cheers mate,love your work Jamie

tribsa:
Hi All
I dont know about Bryans but Madderns are now called Heaver Bros & are @ Exeter Airport

Well how about this?
We all know the big fleet names we see every day of the week, but never notice the smaller players, until someone mentions a name.
Now yesterday,I’m homeward bound from Exeter on the M5,and what do I see going s/b but a MAN with the name Bryans on the front pulling a plain white box.Is this the Bryans we are talking about?

Hello,Thats them Ian…a very inconspicuous fleet with just Bryans on the doors, they used to run around with "keeping it cool again with Bryans " on the roof deflectors, but in recent years they’ve locked horns with mr Vosa so they keep a low profile nowadays.
more from the scrapbook later today.
Cheers Bubbs.
