s jones thread

Elmo I’d forgtton some of those old companies, keep em coming

bubbleman:

.

ibis, or morgan overland was the company started by terry morgan’s(morganfrieght) dad. terrys brother now trades under the morgan overland name and is still based in stoke on trent.he has a silver magnum and pulls one of terrys trailers at times

Good stuff this.
Is the Harding of Avonmouth with the Crusader the same Harding from Frome with the immaculate tackle and are they still going?

Keep 'em coming Bubbleman,thanks.

Hi all, just had a butchers at the thread before getting the napper down.

To Curnock…please feel free to use the S.Jones pic.

To Yella…thanks for the info on Morgans, that was good mate.

To Chris Webb…The Hardings Crusader is operated by Harding Brothers of Avonmouth which has been many times confused with J.R.Hardings of Frome who run the blue lorries. Both firms are still on the go but in both cases the fleets have been downsized.

Cheers for now Marc.

Morning Yella, were they involved in Morgan Varylease (truck and trailer leasing ) used to be in Shropshire and Witton, Birmingham?

Looking at that pic of the motors waiting to ship out, it’s not surprising the Volvo F88 did so well against the British ‘competition’ that pic marks the beginning of the end really, I know ER what do you call em’s (sorry but I can’t bring myself to say the whole thing in the same sentance as Volvo  ) & that other mob with the fetish for all things plastic carried on until recently, but they were always struggling to compete against far superior machinery, what a shame that the lazy workshy layabouts in the BL car division dragged down the likes of AEC, who at one time, made the best lorries in the world.

I think a minutes silence should be observed when looking at that picture

When you think that Scania developed the Leyland 680 and AEC V8 engine blocks to produce more power and eventually turn them into their own engines.
As did DAF with the Leyland 680,which was fitted as a standard engine to start with.then DAF built the engine to their spec, the rest is now history.

This thread truly rocks ! :sunglasses:

The pics of the Whites reminded me of that old late 70s american series 'BJ and the Bear.

Mind you, thinking about it,isn’t it a Kenworth ? I’m not too clued up on american rigs.

Hi there everybody,a few more of these cuttings…

Bit of a mixture here,something for everyone I s’pose

Cheers Marc.

Fantastic pics these, brings back many memories of trucks and companies from long ago, keep them coming.

I particularly remember a company from Dargate,Kent called Speedfreights who ran some of those old round fronted Maggie-Deutz’s.For years there were a couple of them parked in the corner of the yard covered in grass and weeds, and were the only ones I ever saw.
Speedfreights was run by a guy called Reg Moore and after he finished with transport set up a small motor museum just down the road from his old yard.
The yard later became the base for Young Bros who ran some Mack’s on M/E.

And what a lot of companies that were once such a regular sight on the roads, like Wilson’s of Boroughbridge,Hako Ferry Services,P&O Roadways and Atkins of Derby.

Great stuff!

Upload your avatar to photobucket or sumthin similar and then use that image, it should work

Excellent pics, really, pat on the back, the Shertrans takes me back indeed, keep up the excellent work.

Many Thanks

That Shertrans Hino artic reminds me of the time one came into our depot with a load of Irish Cheddar. It would be in the 80s and the load was usually brought in by Connolly Brothers. It was an owner driver with a Hino unit pulling a Shertrans trailer.
I noticed some wheel nuts missing on the unit and tell-tale rust signs coming from the nuts that were left. When I pointed it out to the driver he shrugged his shoulders and laughed about it.So I fetched the supervisor from the office and he gave the driver the option of staying in the yard when tipped and getting some repairs done or phoning the police and let them deal with it.He agreed to get some repairs done and I sent him up to our VMU.While my back was turned he did a left and was on his way out but the gate man stopped him.
The police were duly called and the vehicle was parked at our VMU whilst an estimate for the repairs was carried out.The driver disappeared and we thought he’d done a runner until he turned up the following day.He wouldn’t say where he had been, but I recall that the wagon was in our depot for over two days.He must have paid up as he had gone when I went back after two days off.

Great stuff Bubbleman,any more?

Jobs Worth!

great pictures bubble keep up the good work,

have to agree with all the others Bubs, im luvin these scrapbook memories

At this rate you’ll be catching me me up on the ‘truckin in the 80’s thread’ :astonished:
I mean, you’ve only been on a week and you got 2400 hits

I especially like the early Bussing clipping. Check out the date…1966 :open_mouth:
Interesting to see we were importing “good forgein motors” in those days.

Put your requests in now lads  I KNOW he has tons more
Keep ‘um ■■■■■■■ Marc

Absolutely fantastic material Bubbleman!!! Never seen a collection like this, difficult to take it all in, this is important stuff, most probably should be archived for future reference.
How many hauliers came and went in that 20 year period 65’-'85, the end of A,B, and C licences and the implementation of the O licence changed the industry forever and not always for the best. I remember my old governor George Thorpe saying 5 years after the O licence came in that rates were already down by nearly a half.
And have to agree with Ian Bestbooties (captain sensible) about the Scandinavian influence sounding the death knell for British manufacturers, for a start they had proper heaters, and a gearbox like a cars. How many times back in the late 60’s early '70’s when you complained about the cold draughty cab did the Transport manager say youv’e got your 180 lump alongside you to keep you warm, trouble was it was covered by about 100 blankets to deaden the sound.
I remember when we had our first F86 on demo we all thought it was more like a toy, so small and fragile, only 6.8 litres, and what’s a turbo? compared to 11 or 12 litre ■■■■■■■ and Gardners it was too girly, but its reliability and comfort soon had us singing its praises.
Once again this collection of photo memorabilia is superb, we all remember them, now but I had forgotten them.
Well done mate…

cheers marc remember a lot of em from the old days never wanted em to end thanks again mate

Thanks for all the feedback everybody gonna just wander away from the cuttings for a minute. I found this…I know this firm has been mentioned in several threads and I could have posted this on these, but this thread is pure nostalgia so here it stays
