Hiya,
Nice to see you Marc, I’m currently working my way through “Scrapbook”
looking for a picture you put on of a Bowker lorry (Atki pulling a tilt) I
at the time exclaimed I thought it was myself driving the lorry it was
certainly my allocated motor, the granddaughter wants to see what her
granda used to drive and as you know I never did any pictorial recording
of my driving years and now it’s too late, keep well good buddy.
thanks harry, long retired.

Hello Harry, heres something that might get the brain cells going mate, its a fleet list of Bowkers (probably not complete) but goes from 1966 …“D” plate to 1973 …“M” plate.I think this may be the period that you drove for them, perhaps you recognise some of them…the “lovely” Scania 80 is in there .Was one of the “F” reg Atkis one you had? Cheers Bubbs,

hiya,
Thanks Marc drove several of the Atki’s at different times yes including that 80 thing
but the one I’m looking for isn’t listed it was a “C” reg the only one with the ■■■■■■■
engine you did actually put a pic on featuring the motor and I made a statement that
I was quite possibly driving it in a motorway scene, there was a flysheet over the tilt
which I remember putting on before taking it to Dover, seemingly it had rained in so
was sheeted to prevent further damage.
thanks harry, long retired.

CBV 311C is the one you’re looking for, Harry, I think? It’s a Peter Davies photo, with the flysheet over the tilt.

hiya,
Thanks Chris that’s the one, I’m currently on page 80 of “Scrapbook” but nothing as
yet, the old girl was known affectionately as “the Powerhouse” by the other lads in
the yard, it still had loads of life in it when “Billy” unloaded it but I think it was the
fuel bill that was it’s death knell it doing only half what the 180s achieved I noticed
this when changing from one motor to another I know which I preferred though she
went like a goodun’ and could overtake just about anything that came into view how
much I hated having to take a “Percy” away, it was torture and when I got the first
new Scania 80 it was definitely bye bye for me, the first hill saw me off.
thanks harry, long retired.

Greetings, dexterboy, welcome to the site. You’ll enjoy it as there is a wealth of knowledge on it.Jokes too, are above average, and any questions you ask there’s always one of the members who will have the answer.
You mention that you worked ,among others, for Union Cartage.I did too at Poplar as did some others on the UCC site. We’d be interested to know when you were there.I finished up on Continental before leaving after the move to Warley. All the best,regards,900x20.. P.S. Do you remember this old one? It’s being refurbished.Fleet No. 708 and what a delight driving it to Liverpool!

Harry, it could be this one, as it has a tilt with a fly-sheet. But you can’t see the number plate. There are bound to be much clearer versions than this one out there, especially if Peter Davies took the picture. However, this might do in the meantime. Robert

Hi 9020 only done a month at UCC simonswood then went to whartons /Ritsons also JRT all on meat haulage at Ritsons /Wharton we had a depot on the Highway in Stepney it was a Towers depot we had our own beds in a house at the back fun times some times went with Manny Smith the night shunter to Smithfield market if they had extra night loads all the fuss about the way cattle are killed in this weeks news it has always been so we loaded kosher meat in Liverpool Sunday morning you could not hang it was stacked on the deck the animal was placed in a drum devise turned upside down ,throat cut bled out we also loaded chickens in Liverpool hung by feet throat cut the Kosher meat was trucked down Sunday afternoon Manny Smith took it to Smithfield for midnight this was every Sunday the 5years I was there. No body took any notice then I also loaded pork shoulders from Smithfield for the Spam factory in Liverpool they would cut your fingers to bits if not careful you could get a really bad infection good lads the meat lads the meat haulage was very busy at one time Liverpool London Avonmouth where the busiest. We always got meat given to us at Weddels Towers etc. I was given half a pig once and my then wife would give our local butcher any meat to cut up for her she put the pig in our child’s buggy covered it with a blanket and walked towards our butcher ,one of the neighbors spotted her came over pulled the blanket back and said god he is like his dad I was gutted

Sorry 9020 I was on meat haulage 1965/70 then I lived on the Wirral Ritson shut Birkenhead down and everyone move to Kirby left UCC because it was hard to get there so a mate got me a job driving for Ancliff Tankers in Ellsmere port. I loved the meat haulage it could be hard work especially if you got shop delivery on a Monday morning with a side of beef on your back but I sure was fit did not need the Charles Atlas body building book that was all the rage at the time to all meat guys we will MEAT again on line

Hiya,
Thank you Robert that’s definitely the old girl there must have been a lawman
in my mirror when that was taken I was usually a foot above the tarmac when
on the motorway well I’d only be in my early thirties and a bit daft and having
driven mainly eights with drawbars which were steady away to say the least a
motor that would go a bit was a novelty to me.
