That P&O tilt pictured coming off the boat, new in 83?, was of a batch still being used in 2005 when I was doing P&O traction, used to hate the bloody things, stripouts were a nightmare the level of maintenance left a lot to be desired.
That’s a good point Robroy. By the time you mention, the group had got without most of its in house engineering staff (some were good and some, well…) but those tilts (and there were plenty of them) we used to rebuild at Risley. IIRC the chassis in the picture looks like poss Craven Tasker and the bodies were a little bit higher on these than other spec. Also, a lot of them were supplied in the day with 6 drop side doors which most of were converted to 5, along with all the bodywork. You’ll probably also not fondly remember how awkward some of the canopies were to fit after stripping one down. That’s mainly because different suppliers, although made to the same spec, came in different sizes and some plastic was less flexi than others. Again IIRC, Plastic Protections (Lea Valley?) were heavy but quite baggy so easier to fit, where as Mitco Pecks from Wigan and the Dutch firm Roland were a really awkward fit (and how many times did you put one on back to front?) All hail the tautliner and happy new year!

Is that Hammonds F88?, I work with some lads that used to work for Roy and they can remember driving the old AEC he had. Keep up the good work with the pictures as it’s nice seeing motors that were local to me when i was growing up!.

Literally stumbled across these in the loft whilst putting the Xmas decs away.
Drove for Hughes from the early to late 80s.3210
Sorry about the last pic . . . cheesey or what?
good to see those Hughes motors ,shame about the last one LOL,now i know who you are and remember the face ,where did you win the cups ?Steve.
Nice pics Suedehead - I’m not going to go down the ‘Which category did you win’ route cos that would be rude…
Just goes to show what you come across when you’re stumbling about in the loft… any more?
Here’s a few of my recent finds. As some may know, I drove a few like these in years gone by. When the Commercial Motor used to put the supplements in, I kept the ones that had any meaning for me. They’ve been through a couple of marriages and countless house moves and still they survive… Who says I haven’t got my priorities right??
I’m guessing this one dates from '80 or '81 ( W reg… )
