I notice on Derek Coopers motors that they are signwritten “Norwich Depot” - does he have any others?

He certainly used to have a list of depots on the truck doors, mostly Eastern England.

Pete.

Here’s a couple of others from different depots (there were more). first one courtesey of the legend that is bubbleman…

If i rememeber rightly Derek Cooper had a yard in Red Lodge next to the ale house.

Regards

Daz

Hi jlp,I didn’t know that SLD 789 fleet 122 had been preserved. I do remember the motor as I loaded it at Purfleet with W S whilst my wagon was under repair. What happened to it after that I don’t know, but it would be nice if somebody else knew.

Hi Chris spoke to Brian over the weekend he thinks he remembers you. He worked for AE Evans between 1971 to 1973 from the Barking depot.
I am looking for a good picture of SLD 789 and have been in contact with Roy from Articulation pix he only has the sad looking tankerless picture. Do you know who owns the printing rights of aeevanswhitespirit.jpg as I would like to buy a mounted version for Brian.

Thanks again for your help John

Would those 2800s really have been rated @56t?

The Daf DKSs were makers plated 56 tons but Uk plated weight was 32 tons

I take it that photo of the Kenton 8w was staged? If not, that’s a bit of a gamble tipping in a field on that sort of angle.

Remember seeing that old girl in spain early 90’s many a time normally parked at Freds!
Seem to remember it went up for auction sround 1993 when Osborne got rid of her. Anyone know if she is still about?

ron osborne went bust that is why she went to auction,
i drove her and wanted her when he went bust , but its a long story why he had to send her to auction.
friday i would leave rotherham load part load at leeds , then to MK to top up ,sunday at Freds for dinner, tip monday load and back home for , turn round friday ,500 bhp lhd

Must have had dinner with ya then Turps. Went on the ■■■■ one sunday evening with the boy who drove her, i was on McKellars at the time. Don’t think we ended up in a Baghouse though!!!
Was a long time ago though

Here’s some more from the Essex depot, I think it was at Gt. Dunmow. I bought the pics at a steam fair and on the back of them is a copyright stamp by Colin Knapp.

Angle…what angle? We used to tip tarmac at worse tilts than that, especially on the MIRA test track banking! Had rear wheels off the ground a few times over the years when tipping stone across slopes but normally it was ok as long as you had the engine flatout to get the body up rapidly as once the load moved you knew that it would stay upright, wouldn’t entertain it with a twin ram setup though! :open_mouth:
What I didn’t like was tipping tarmac in trenches when you could only get one side of wheels in the trench, that used to get the old ar*e cheeks clenched, especially when the body wouldn’t come down because the ram collars became wedged due to the amount of body lean and the front axle beam would be scraping the trench side so you struggled to get out again. Didn’t do the tyre sidewalls much good either, and I recall a Volvo F7 ripping the PTO off the gearbox on the trench side on the M6 at Corley, that upset the ganger’s!

Been there, done that and I didn’t like it either.

Yes it does concentrate the mind somewhat! I suppose nowadays the driver would refuse to do it and the job would stop until some H&SE fellow came up with something else. :unamused: It was just how the job was, nobody thought twice about it.

Never tipped one like that Cargo, had a load of muck stick in an alloy bodied 8w; Had my break and a sleep while it inched it’s way out. Gave me a shock when one side came unstuck rapidly!
The muckshifter I drive at the moment is alloy with ply boards inside- it’s amazing how different the load shifts compared to a steel body.

Marvellous nostalgia as always Mr Bubbleman. I bumped into one of your / our old muckers this week in Lidl Latchford - ever the big spender, the legend that is Jimmy Dawson. He looks incredibly well (lost a load of weight coz he had his hips done) I’ve told him about your immense presence on here and he said he’d check it out. I might have mentioned before, but he confirmed Danny Wellman sadly passed away (the big C) a couple years ago, Joe and Liz Hinds retired to Ross on Wye, Mike Fisher is still doing a bit somewhere and Steve Hayes apparently got himself a Thai woman (or did he say a tyre woman?) All the best matey and keep them fab pics coming in 2013!
