Would this be one of the units that you were thinking of dm61.
Maybe Chris Webb can tell us which registration area was AJ, I dont think it was Uddersfield.

ayup mm>thanks for jogging the memory banks with the Strato photos…, and Chris (slight late replying, just got back in off another neet shift)- appen you’re both not too far off…the remaining ERFs had west yorks (UB/UG/NW/WX etc) regs, and the Atkis had AJ/PY regs, and were sourced from North East Truck n Van at Billingham, handy for dropping by as we were in and out of Wilton (Dupont) and Aniline /Nitrobenzene plant, Stockton tankwash,Seal Sands for the Benzine etc, and closest of all,the Nitric plant (East Gate) Billingham…most if not all those spots i reckon you will have tipped or loaded in a time or3 cheers for now d

hiya,
Chris, Ah’ the UG registration I remember the Leeds constabulary receiving a new
batch of cars being delivered with the UG reg but prefixed with the letter M It is
said that they was a bit short of motors for a while until they got them reg’d with
something the public couldn’t take the p""s out of.PS this would have been around
1972 I think it was being talked about when I worked on the tanks for Bayfords.
thanks harry, long retired.

I worked on these at Hansons for a couple of years (Kestrel contract) running back and forth from Huddersfield to Teeside every day, including Christmas day and Boxing day! It was a steady job and I don’t think I would have left if they hadn’t moved the Huddersfield plant up to Teeside.
Has anyone got any pics with the tanks on?

The photos of that AEC Chinese six that belonged to Tyburns, my dad drove one just the same out of there depot they had at Ashton-in Makerfield could of been early 70,s late 60s

Hi again, heres a few more lads,Cheers Bubbs,

Is this Herbert Bolton of Huddersfield? - it’s a Huddersfield reg motor and they look like Hepworth pipes on the trailer. They used to run coal tippers as well I think and Rodney Bolton the son used to run tallows and fats in a tanker in the '70s and '80s. Rodney told me they (H. Boltons) had the first Scania (Vabis) in Huddersfield and drivers used to line up to drive it!

Yes this is the first big J for Herbert Bolton & Son from Huddersfield we ran Tanks Flats and Tippers you are right about being the first Scania 110 in Huddersfield. But John Sparling of Birds Edge got his on the road in August and ours was September.

Is that Rodney? Are you still working or retired? Do you remember me, Steve Cook who worked for Sykes then went owner-driving with this ex Sykes motor:

I’m doing agency work now until I get my pittance of a pension next April.

Hi all,
For those requesting the area of “AJ” registration, I am sure it was issued for the North Riding of Yorkshire.
In the 1960s and 1970s , nearly all the motor vehicles seen in the Wensleydale/Swaledale valleys had “AJ” , or “VN”
reg.nos. These might have been issued from the Local Motor Tax offices , which I think was Northallerton.

I hope this is of some help.

Cheers, cattle wagon man.

Hi Roy.
“AJ” “PY” and “VN” were all Yorks North Riding registrations up to 1974 and I reckon you are right about them being issued from Northallerton as it was the county town of Yorks N. R… After 1974 they were assigned to Middlesborough.
In fact Northallerton is still the county town albeit North Yorkshire nowadays.

I saw these two in Turkey about three years ago,in the fruit market at Fethiea ( not sure about the spelling but pronounced Fetteay ) badged as Ford Cargo but more “heavy duty”. Not good photos I know but it was a crowded place and I had to stand fairly close to the subjects. Cheers Haddy.

If not mistaken i think these ford cargos are popular in Brazil.

He certainly used to have a list of depots on the truck doors, mostly Eastern England.
