Hello again, heres todays bunch…a nice red and rust for my pal Harry to start with    ,Cheers Bubbs,

bubbleman the scania 80 was at the lorry driver of the year competion it was driven by phil symonds from swansea branch he actually became lorry driver of the year, it was a swansea motor pulling a bridgend branch trailer as bridgend had a driving school where the training for the compition was done, i worked at bridgend branch as a fitter then driver all the best alan.

Hello again,Alan…yes mate you’re dead right,I remember the Swansea lad won the competition but couldn’t recall his name also I recall a few years later a chap from BRS Carmarthen also won the competition…wouldnt it be great if we could get the likes of old Harry,Dennis (Bewick),Chris Webb and others, get an old motor like a Mandator or a Borderer and have a bit of fun to see who could still put it through its paces…I wonder who would win
Heres todays stuff,Cheers Bubbs,

That would be one great “barrel of laughs” Marcus, especially if we were required to produce a valid HGV licence before the “off”,Cheers Dennis.

Hi again,Dennis…How about the “fastest couple up” a Le Mans sprint to the wagon and get coupled together…last one gets the teas in,I think poor old Harry would be last…the climb up into the lorry would probably take all of his time

Heres todays stuff,Cheers Bubbs,

I remember Boltons Merc fleet. Not sure what happened to the firm but IIRC they used to import Tupperware from the continent (poss Belgium?) A full cap load would be a couple of tons and that was mainly the pallets

hiya,
Don’t know about me being last in the Le Mans sprint and coupling-up competition,
if you propose using Scania 80s I won’t even turn up so there.
thanks harry, long retired.

Can’t see it too well on my phone, is it part AEC Matador? Looks like a triangle badge on the grille and the doors remind me of one of those military AECs.

I would agree about the military AEC but looks like it has a square bonit and not shore if its ment to or not but its got to be an old AEC (i think  )

Nothing rare about a broken down Tk is there?

Hi Marc

Is there a caption to go with the ARC FL7? If I’m right, it’s an ex OD called Sid Miles. He originated from the Kent area and basically turned up one day as an OD - nobody knew him beforehand but apparently he had friends in management. After a while he became well known as a bit of a rogue… A few years later he disappeared as fast as he arrived under a very ■■■■■■■■■ cloud… :open_mouth:

He’s pictured here loading black in Cromhall quarry under the Marini plant ( I think…). The quarry closed in the late eighties/early nineties and the plant was moved to another site but has now been scrapped - thank God!

A lot of OD’s had these early FL’s - Volvo’s launch coincided with the launch of the OD scheme so I guess there was some good deals to be had!

Nice pic and good memories

Yes its a Matador, typically “adapted for use” by the Fair-boys! Got to give it to them, they are masters at modifying wagons to suit their needs

Where in Cromhall was the ARC pit? I’ve been to the Cemex one (now closed) where they had funny opening times due to a school I think. You had to report to Wickwar, load at Cromhall and go back to Wickwar to weigh.
