harry_gill:
hiya,
You was lucky Brian it cost me £7.60 for half a lager and a large dry white wine
just off Oxford Street I couldn’t refuse cos’ I’d half drunk the lager while he was
pouring the wine, I did ask him was I buying shares in the brewery.
thanks harry, long retired.

now if you go into the students bar in the college where I now work it is 2-50 for a pint and 2 for 1 on friday nights, in reality the rents in central london are so dear now that any small one man band cafes and the like have nearly all gone and the large multinationals have taken over such as coffee chains there is no end of them, there was a little cafe we used to go to off tottenham court rd which was rented from the bedford estate their rents were I think doubled the other year and he had to go the road now is being gentrified , any of you who live in london will know I mean I come from islington and my wife from bethnal grn these areas now you need to be a millionaire to buy a house there, its very hard now for the young ones to get a place glad I am beyond that now, cheers all fredm

It’s no wonder that the tube drivers are on a reported £50,000 a year.
Rip off capital city of the world. :imp: Somebody made a lot of money with the prices that were being charged at the Olympics.

hiya,
Fredm, used to lodge in Lonsdale Square, Barnsbury, Islington and the
pub I used was quite close the Drapers Arms, the beer was reasonable
for London in those days but if you went through to the Caledonian Rd
the prices went up a bit and then a bit more if you ventured down the
road to Kings Cross, there was a couple of reasonably priced premises
in Liverpool Rd, alas this was the 1970s.

Hello again lads, heres a few pics from Shakeysteves collection.Cheers Bubbs,

Hi bubbs, i couldn’t get the photo over but is the one on the left from the same stable as Bond Truking

cheers Ade

Hi Ade

I’ve been having a think about this old girl and the only one I can remember like it was run by an owner driver from Gloucester, Byron Thompson RIP. He was a lovely fella and would do anything to help you out but if you got on the wrong side of him, look out!

As Bubbs has said, there was loads of ‘YDG’ regs around this area - mostly sold by Shakysteve I suspect! Byron’s is the only one I can recall having a red roof. It definitely wasn’t one of Bond Truckings though, although they did have 4 or possibly 5 like it…

Can you tell us when and where the pic was taken please?

When sleeper cabs had not been invented, Georgie Brays “Transport Hotel” Liverpool Rd. Islington. God what a place, I still shudder.
A little tale:- 1961, a few of us from Chappells were on a night out there and, as yer do, we had a wash and a meal and decided to go out for a pint. One lad said “We’ll take one of the Atky units”. MISTAKE, we went in it, we didn’t come back in it because (a) we;d had a good drink and (b) we couldn’t find it. We’d lost it. Took three of us until lunchtime the following day walking the streets looking for it. We DID find it but we learned our lesson, never again. We were young and daft. :unamused:

hiya,
Fredm it was actually Lonsdale Square where my digs were ( did stop at Briggs
one night), Alf Butcher who owned the house where we stayed I believe turned
down half a million quid at one time for his house but he still had a year or two
to go before retirement so was staying put until at least that time, another pub
I used which was near to hand was owned by Dorothy Squires another nice one
to spend an evening in. PS in the early 1960s used to dig in North Rd just off the
Caledonian road the cafe was on your left when travelling from the Calle to York
Way the guy who owned it was called Nick only knew it as Nicks cafe
