Stanley dock bridge, Liverpool.

Hi, any idea when this was taken, because one of My Grandfathers was a carter out of the docks at the bootle end of the dock road, and he used two horses one of which was a grey! he was still working there in late forties/early fifties, but gave it up about 1955 and retired over the water to wallasey.Mike

It could be anytime up to the mid 60s. Here’s a link to the CARTERS ARCHIVE COLLECTION…Link here

hiya,
Remember dropping some bits for export into Arthur V Crutchley at Bootle
in the late 60s some of the crates was transhipped directly onto a horse &
cart and taken straight down to the dock, the carter had developed traits
from the dockers, the crates being quite heavy had to be moved over by
myself without a hint of a hand while fellow mi lad just sat in his driving
position puffing on a Woodbine.
thanks harry, long retired.

keep your head down harry , that anorak fellow has fired the big j thread up again , there’ll be some flak coming in from morecombe soon i reckon

Those Liverpool dockers were a class act, they weren’t too enthusiastic about hard graft. They once nearly killed me one hot summers afternoon, everyone of the gang just stood and watched me hand ball a load on. Early 60’s, I was only a young lad just starting, p iss taking was their strong point. :imp:

hiya,
Nowt to worry about that advert has been shown previously it only shows
what the possibilities were there was no 8 potters fitted in big Js in house
the odd one might have been been knocked together in private hands but
that’s it, there are many people from Gardners and Guys still in the land
of the living who could verify if the 8 pot ever went in that direction, I
think not.
thanks harry, long retired.

Another milestone reached Marcus.

A great shot from a memorable era that oozes London suburbia with the mock tudor facings to the houses in the background. Note the Vauxhall Victor appearing from the right. You needn’t worry about extended warranty in those days for that car - they rusted out for a past-time!

This S18 MkII of H. Cox & Sons (Plant Hire) Ltd dates from September 1956, the location being the junction of the A1 / A406 in Finchley, north London.
The load being carried in this July 1959 Arthur Ingram view which appears in Foden Special Vehicles is a Ruston Bucyrus 10-RB skimmer. The 10-RB first went into production in 1934 and was a popular machine with builders and contractors. It remained in production until 1969 by which time 7625 examples had left the manufacturer’s Lincoln plant. (Roundoak/Ingram archive)

So glad you didn’t stop when you said you were going to Bubbleman, it just keeps getting better.

The Fibrenyle Foden brings back memories, i was 18 years old & an apprentice fitter at BRS Beccles when they took over the transport & can remember the motors well. There were a few artic Fodens, an ERF B series & a Leyland Terrier box van, but most of their lorries were flatbed Seddon Atkinson 400 wagon & drags with A frames, Gardner 180’s, David Brown gearboxes & two speed axles. The first time I had to reverse a trailer into the workshop took almost all morning , but with some advice from the driver after he stopped laughing at the knots I was tieing it up in, I got there in the end.

I also wish I had a camera with me when I think back.

Fibrenyle has been through various name changes over the years, and have relocated just out of town on the Ellough Ind. Estate, (suppose it’s a bit like “Triggers broom”). The old factory has been knocked down.

Dad used to park his F6 tipper out the back of Waterloo coaches which was on the industrial estate opposite Fibrenyle’s Ellough factory. Dad said the Fibrenyle lad’s weren’t too keen on leaving the yard the morning after the big storm of 87. Mind you they were running max height motors at the time, i don’t reckon they would of got far from the yard before it was time for the new mirror phone calls would of started.

Great pic of the 10RB. Bit odd to carry it crosscarriage like that…maybe he wasn’t going very far.
Isn’t it a rope operated back acter rather than a skimmer? Please don’t shout at me if I’m wrong!!

A few Yank tanks from me today…

Does anyone know anything at all about this one? I have NO idea where or when I took it  It was a complete surprise to find it in the album! :open_mouth:

Piston Broke, that Peterbilt is a first for me; Never seen one on Oxfordshire reg’ plates (WWL).
Does anyone know if there’s still a Peterbilt/Kenworth still being used in the UK pulling a bulk tipper? I haven’t seen it for a while but it did used to get into Hansons’ pit at Cassington. It was in T&D a few years ago.

I think I have a photo of that motor I took at a wedding in Northmoor a good few years back. Seem to remember someone telling me on the day it belonged to Len Allen then. I’ll see if I can find it & post it, I had it a short while ago and was going to put it on the Oxford thread, then forgot!
