However, in the old days I would have come up the A4 then straight through central London. Reasonable though to think that he might have got onto the South Circular then turned left up through Blackwall. Isn’t it?

No.
South Circular it was - fine going in, totally bolloxed coming back out
I was 21, was quite used to farm collections/pick-ups and delivering to the docks then was presented with a load of paper to Stratford. Young, stupid and wet behind the ears…
The South Circular was, still is for all I know, a Ring Route as opposed to the North Circular which was more of a Ring Road.
As therefore more a collection of different roads it was sometimes more diffcult to follow and easy to wander off. I didn’t like it at all, less then the NC, and I never liked that much. As I said before, I used to head straight through and out the other side.

hiya,
A garden shed with the door shut and a gramaphone emitting hammering
noises is the answer Dave if they think you’re tiring yourself out I think you
will be left in peace, a pair of ear plugs and a deck chair and you’ve cracked
it, one step ahead good buddy one step ahead, just remember to put a couple
of bob in the leccy meter or she might hear you snoring should the gramaphone
switch off.
thanks harry, long retired.

I think you’re right about the trailer, a Queen Mary isn’t it? With a flat deck constructed on it. Did they have the angled front corners to get the most out of the length, ie closer to the the cab?
The tractor I have no idea about except that the cab is self contructed by the look of it. The only clue really is the radiator so I suppose whoever identifies that gets the prize.
