Scrapbook Memories (Part 1)

harry:
Its a refurbed WW2 RAF Crossley. The country is probably Oz ,judging by the fairweather kit & the suntanned driver standing tall.

Think you may have hit the jackpot, almost, there Harry. Now you mention it the rad does have some resemblance to a Crossley railmotor (a bus on railway undercarriage) I once rode on in Queensland.

However, although the ‘bitsa’ tradition was alive and well in the Northern Territory before the war, I reckon that home made cab (and the tanned driver) smack more of India to me.

There would have been plenty of RAF stuff left over there after the war.

Concrete floor, corrugated iron sheds, white driver …too posh for India? KT 150 puzzles me.

Hiya harry…you’d better tell the young uns what the ladder at the back of the cabs are for on that line up of trucks.

Good stuff as usual Bubbs. The town where the ICI Mammoth Major with the pellet bins on looks familiar, any idea where it is? I thought it might be Ludlow but I don’t think ICI ran plastic pellets down that neck of the woods.I know they did Pontypool and some other places that I have forgotten :unamused:

hiya,
Remember well those Tennent’s Albions Marc, and unusual for a Scottish outfit
the livery was a bit drab for a company with a few bob.
thanks harry, long retired.

hi all the ici aec looks to me like its coming around the queens head corner in monmouth , when the a40 used to go thru the town. but having been brought up in and around monmouth for the last60 years, ive neverknown the pub to have been called anything other than the queens head ,and itdont look like that name on the board.

Ramone, the plastic pellets were made at Wilton so you are correct in that respect. As far as I remember those loads were delivered 24/7 and later the bins were disposed of and tankers were used.A friend of mine reckons the town could be Usk or Monmouth which has been suggested but he wants to see the photo first.

It says Glousters Oldest Inn on the sign, shouldnt be to hard to trace

This is it then, the Old Black Bear in Tewkesbury,Glosters oldest inn.Is that the olde Englishe spelling for Gloucester?
You’ve got good eyesight MOC,another problem solved by the looks of it.

hiya,
A’h Tewkesbury isn’t that where they stand their dead up in bus shelters,
I spent a “fortnight” there one night.
thanks harry, long retired.

Hi again chaps, heres some real old AECs,I bet Harry Gill and Chris Webb have done graft loading lorries like in these pics,Cheers Bubbs,

Spot on there Marcus, what a fabulous set of photos of the AEC’s,you can see the pride that has been taken in the way the loads are immaculate,my only comment is the two geezers stood almost under that reach truck, and they were always a bit unstable especially with the pallet 10ft in the air,but hey! them were the days before all this 'elf and safety bollox when the job got done in a proper workmanlike manner!!! Come back “H” and Webbo all is forgiven, IMHO you and your ilk were worth 10 of to-days modern day curtain pullers !! Cheers Dennis.
