The John Raymond SA401 looks like a very long wheelbase for its day

It looks like a 6x2 with the 2nd steer removed to me.

Hiya…my mate at prf new…

not much left same bumper and possibly springs…i took this 2 weeks ago

John

bubbs, good to see the John Hatheralls old ERF,nearly as tidy as the FL10 i sold him a few years ago.

Does that make you an ex Volvo salesman, shakysteve? John bought the FL10 to replace the ERF. I think it was late '94 or early '95 on an ‘M’ plate and he bought it brand new. Both driven by Pete Smith, John’s longest serving driver who retired a few years ago.

John is still going but only has 4 now - 3 FM 6 wheelers and an 8 wheeler. The only one in his colours is semi-retired now…

There used to be dozens of small hauliers around here, all with their own individual colours, but they have gradually dwindled, partly because of retirement, partly because of the state of the industry and lack of work, and partly because of the March of the White Paintpot (Quarry O.D’s  )

Nice to see a pic of Gore’s, Bubbs. They used to have a great fleet of ERF’s. Not too sure why they finished but it all seemed to be ■■■■■■■ with the move from High Littleton to the Chippenham Truck Stop site. A crying shame…

I was on for Gore’s when they finished, I was the last truck back to the yard on Friday night. I got a call in Sudbury on the Tuesday morning from the firm who was dealing with it, to tell me Gore’s were finished I had enough work to last until Friday, he asked me to finish the week off and they would pay me cash, I did the work and they paid me. I got every penny due to me, don’t know about the other drivers, never saw any of them again. Don’t know if it’s true or not, but I was told the reason they finished, was because they sold the yard at High Littleton ( on paper ) to a developer for posh houses, took up the money to buy the yard at Chippenham, with the intentions of opening a truck stop as well, a while after we moved in there the developer pulled out :open_mouth: the rest is history.

Thanks for that, John. That ties up with what I heard years ago but its good to have it confirmed by someone who knows. I know it was quite a shock when it went around that they were closing - it must have been a helluva shock for all you employees. Like I said, a crying shame…

…and a later model

Cheers for the Stoford pic Bubbs mate,That little 301 would have had it’s tongue hanging out at 38t.

I did a weeks work experience with them as a fitter/dogs body when I was 15 back in 1990. I got growled at for taking photos of trucks when I should have been sweeping up/making tea.

Are they still running?

If so what are they running?

Ta mate.

hiya,
Jonto, is the body on the two AECs from the 50s and the 60s the same one ?,
if so it’s a credit to the builder having lasted well especially on that job.

hiya,
Jonty, the only livestock I ever carried was in the late 50s early 60s when I had to
have a trailer boy and most of them appeared half dead, did a bit of swinging beef
from Ireland to the London area at one time that was hard work a bit of weight in
half a cow and only having two legs on one side they couldn’t walk very well.
thanks harry long retired.
