Cheers Bubbs,

Excellent pic of the Vabis, thanks Marc! Parked in Hollin Bridge Street, Blackburn, with the Hamilton Arms in the background. With an Atki just peeping over the wall of what we used to call “the land”, across the road from the main depot side.

Bloomin’ 'eck!! I was in the Hamilton Arms 2 weeks ago. My son lives in Hamilton Street. It’s weird how you look at something and immediately know where it is. I didn’t see the lorry though.

hiya,
I’ve put a few pay packets over the bar of the Hamilton in my single days
not my Vabis but the Atki peering o’er the wall might have been mine.
thanks harry long retired.

Hiya… this is a Bill Clewes photo but unfortunatley not a 8 LXB Guy but looks OK

John

I think this is the Critchlows I’ve been looking for, did they change to canary yellow C and E series ERF’S in the 80’s? Any pics by any chance?

Yes they did change their colours to yellow later on,
Years before gardners started fitting turbo’s I remember Critchlows experimenting with a turbo on a 180 in one of those big j’s (may have been that one it had a sleeper), I asked the driver Len what it went like on a run to Scotstoun, he said it went up Shap just like any of the other 180’s except it whistled.
Not much success there then !

Barry Waddy ,HI Trev H ,do you know iff Critchlows fitted a 6 LW Gardener in to a Leyland Beaver with a L A D cab ,we baught it and i think it belong to them and poss ,Bewick had it has a shunter ?, yours Barry Waddy

Thanks for your help John, those ERF’s always stood out in the queue loading at Lovell’s, very simple and understated livery but also effective, certainly catches the eye
