Remember the firm of Illtyd Thomas from my days loading from British Gypsum at Sherburn in Elmet. One driver was called Norman and drove A Mk11 Atki and the other one I knew was called Moch? not too sure of the spelling! Great blokes, real grafters!

Lawrence Dunbar:
Well my experience with Dockers over the years, starting in the 50s the only thing they backed was themselves & bloody horses, the worst ones I encountered were Liverpool, London, & Hull, the rest were passable, Regards Larry.

Your right about those scouse gits Larry, if anyone deserved to lose there jobs they are top of the list. We regularly tipped there in the 70s with steel from Consett,
it was a magic tip as it was one lift, 20t for their bonus. It was a different matter if you had a load of handball. Put it on those pallets driver and the jodrells
walked away. I once met a cousin of mine in the queque when I was tipping steel he had been there 24hrs with a lifeboat, as it was deck cargo they wouldn’t
tip him until the hatches were put back on and they “couldn’t double handle” the load. I was back with another load of steel the following day and he was still
there!! Thats the only thing I would thank Maggie Thatcher for they definitley deserved all they got. Regards Kev.

Lawrence Dunbar:
Aye & look at the Pool now well & truly F kd Its now run privateley, Or might add it was the last time I had the pleasure of loading there If I could call It pleasure, I did get loaded pretty quick, & on my way, of course thats over 12 years ago ., So is things still the same there or has it got better ? or worse, Hopefuly better, Regards Larry

Hello Lawrence, you are being too kind to the dockers. I remember tipping at Hull (handballed bags) and it came a few spots of rain, the shop steward and his henchmen came out of their hide away and threatened all and everybody with physical violence if they didn’t stop working straight away. Again at Liverpool I waited all day to tip some steel pipes as you did and then they expected a “tip” and was told the next time I came I could expect an even longer wait for not tipping them, cheeky sods :unamused:
Regards Tony H.

I tipped a full load of handball whisky, roped and sheeted on a flat at Liverpool from Dumbarton bond.
Got there early evening not really wanting to tip but they were adamant, needed the bonus.
I parked in the secure area and they said they wanted a fiver for ‘labour’. I only had a tenner so went off to the dock road, after stripping the sheets, to get some change.
The nearest pub had the world cup on a telly (1966) so I had a pint or 3 (would be rude just to ask for change :unamused: )and settled down to watch the match.
When it was over I strolled back across the road to find a load of sweating and knackered dockers - and an empty trailer.
‘Where’d you get to?’ the foreman asked. ‘Had to go miles’ I said, ‘nobody had any change. I’m worn out with walking’ :unamused:
Lifted the sheets onto the trailer and didn’t stop laughing for, well I still am as it happens, 46 years later.

hiya,
“Spardp” I too did many loads of scotch “fae o’er the border” to various docks mainly to the
“Pool” and London, just wished I’d have been bright enough to think of that dodge it was
usually me who finished up sweaty and knackered while the dockers kept me supplied with
pallets and if I was lucky they would be “kind” enough to keep them at flat level just to be
nice to their fellow union members, bloody hypocrites.
thanks harry long retired.

LOOKING FOR SOMEONE TO PULL…

Did Praill’s have a place in Hereford? I remember back in '66 I lost my brakes on my Albion 4 wheeler running down the steep hill into, I think, Ledbury. Managed to pull up at the lights at the bottom on the handbrake and Praill’s came out and fetched me in.

They had a lot of difficulty in finding spare parts because they couldn’t identify the model. The mystery was solved when they noticed the extra long wheelbase and rear overhang (I once loaded some boxes destined for a first drop on the tail and could hardly steer it round to the 2nd pick up because the front wheels were almost in the air :open_mouth: ) and came to the conclusion that it was originally a coach chassis. I can’t remember the model name now though.
