Scottish Middle East Hauliers

Hi Steve, The Falcongate driver you mentioned would have been Gordon Durnoe who had a squint in one eye. Unfortunatley he was found dead in his cab one morning outside the wine warehouse in Harlow while waiting to tip his load of Bulgarian wine. I ran with Gordon on many occasions and he was a well respected and genuine guy.If I remember correctly he told me that Falcongate was formed by a well established Aberdeenshire Haulier called Peter Cheyne of Kintore. I was told that if he set up a seperate company away from the oil hub of Aberdeen (at that time) that he would be given all the oil related export work that he could handle. That was when Falcongate was formed. Peter Cheyne supplied the first three trucks which were still in his fleet colours with his name on them and his drivers. One of whom was Gordon Durnoe one was George Sharp (I Think) and the other lad had red hair but i cant remember his name. The other two chaps who ran the office later bought out peter cheyne and had a large fleet on middle east work for a number of years. That is how i remember it being told to me and hope that i have not offended anyone if i am wrong. Regards Jamie.

A Scot Lost in the Valley’s

Thank’s again Jamie for what I thought was some really interesting information.
The Gordon who I remember running with on Falcongate had a D.A.F. 2800 which had Scottish number plates and I seem to think that all their trucks had Scottish rego’s in the early 80’s. I was introduced to Gordon by Billy ( Jock ) MacDonald, the original COWBOY  and I can remember them discussing something about The House Of Frazer having a finger in the pie of Falcongate but I dont know how true that was, it could of just been trailer box talk.
Two of the best guy’s that that I ever ran with on Falcongate were Big Jim Smethurst ( R.I.P.) and Davy Faraday who I was fortunate to work with some years later.
Best regards Steve.

Hi This is some of Eskside internationals trucks waiting to cross the border into iraq. I think this would be the mid to late
70s. Plus another fine picture of a pair of Eskside Dafs with george scott and alex peat parked up at Musselburgh.

Four little volvos compared to the standard today but probably a luxury at the time!!

And the first three F12’s to join the fleet , in all their glory waiting to go on their maiden voyage to Iran.

Hi Jamie

What did you drive while you were working for Frank? He told me he had experiance with Turbostars aswell hence the reason he bought that bag of bones the Eurostar to do the Uzbek runs!! It had a great engine but i think we had most the truck strapped up to get it home :unamused: :unamused:

Hi This is another picture of an eskside international daf. The driver was Tam Alston and the second picture is relaxing with a drink middle east style from the left is Jock Sinclair Alex Peat and Rob Moffat.

Hi Bullitt
I know rab went to the middle east when it was on not sure about the north africa bit a freind of mine said when rab bought this trailer this sheet was on it and was replaced later. But I notice the picture I put on the trailer was a tandem and the ones you put on it has been converted to triaxle. Its a nice set up though .The two pictures were taken at a car park in Musselburgh.
Cheers Al

can anyone put a name to this man standing infront of the george thompson international(stirling) volvo

This is Frank buying bread at the cafe we used to stop at every trip across from the police post near Aral Kazakstan in 1996

Think he was trying his hand

I do recall John McNeil Ltd,near the Glasgow tunnel. They were part of Arbuckle Smith and did Middle East for a couple of years.John subsequently ran a big P+O road operation, out of Dover.I believe W.H Malcolm also subbed for them!

Hi muhandis89

I used to work with a guy named Alec Miller who used to work for Mcneil and he is still tramping all over europe now for Scottish fridge company even tho he is into his seventies. I wonder if anyone else on here knows him

Was this Billy McDonald,(Short in stature),the same one that worked for Chapman and Ball in the Mid '70’s?
The only guys i ran into on a regular basis on Falcongate were Harry Woofendon and “Shaky” George.

Hi Ian,
I didn’t know that Harry Woofy worked for Falcongate, I only met him driving for Alan Dayson and that guy from Hull who pulled for Whittles.
As regards Old Jock Macdonald, yes he did work for Chapman and Ball in the seventies, I think that at some time he might of had a stroke or an accident as he had a stiff left arm. I took an M.A.N. 2800 over from him when he got a Scania 111, it was a mess, with wires all over the cab for his C.B., fan and an extra red light over the bunk. Billy might of been a long distance lorry driver but he certainly was not an electrician as the cab nearly set on fire on my first trip.
About a year later I had a fortnights holiday while Billy’s Scania was in for an M.O.T. so they sent Billy out in my motor.
On my first trip back I was stopped at the Rumanian / Bulgarian border at Russe where the soldiers found a couple of ■■■■■ mags under my battery cover. Billy told me that he had put them there so that he could get some diesel but had forgotten about them.
Billy passed away about fifteen years ago after a long battle with cancer, he was driving for Antler luggage from Bury at the time, another good one sadly gone.
Best regards Steve.

Hullo Mushroomman,
Steve, I remember Harry when he was on for Alan Dayson at Whittles, and Errol Flynn, he was on there as well. Was the bloke from Hull Bill Robertson (JAWS) ?
Cheers, Archie.
