I only met him driving for Alan Dayson and that guy from Hull who pulled for Whittles.
Best regards Steve.
Hullo Mushroomman,
Steve, I remember Harry when he was on for Alan Dayson at Whittles, and Errol Flynn, he was on there as well. Was the bloke from Hull Bill Robertson (JAWS) ?
Cheers, Archie.

Hullo dm46,
No sorry I didnt ever do the photograph thing, sorry I didnt now though. I only ever met Bill Robertson once, that was in the Office of Whittles. But I do remember him parking his truck in his front garden up Willerby Road, first of all for a long time it was an Archbolds truck and then that awful turquoise coloured M/E spec merc.
Cheers, Archie.

Hi Ian,
I didn’t know that Harry Woofy worked for Falcongate, I only met him driving for Alan Dayson and that guy from Hull who pulled for Whittles.
As regards Old Jock Macdonald, yes he did work for Chapman and Ball in the seventies, I think that at some time he might of had a stroke or an accident as he had a stiff left arm. I took an M.A.N. 2800 over from him when he got a Scania 111, it was a mess, with wires all over the cab for his C.B., fan and an extra red light over the bunk. Billy might of been a long distance lorry driver but he certainly was not an electrician as the cab nearly set on fire on my first trip.
About a year later I had a fortnights holiday while Billy’s Scania was in for an M.O.T. so they sent Billy out in my motor.
On my first trip back I was stopped at the Rumanian / Bulgarian border at Russe where the soldiers found a couple of ■■■■■ mags under my battery cover. Billy told me that he had put them there so that he could get some diesel but had forgotten about them.
Billy passed away about fifteen years ago after a long battle with cancer, he was driving for Antler luggage from Bury at the time, another good one sadly gone.
Best regards Steve.
Steve,
I’m possibly wrong about Harry then, but I do know like most of us he worked for a few different firms.
Your mention of Billy’s stiff arm confiorms it was the same bloke, and his cab was a bit like a dog kennel.RIP Bill.

Hi again john
Spoke to frank and he thinks the driver you met would probably be alec ketchin
I read in another thread about John Stamper’s of Rutherglen having a go at the M/E sometime in the 70s.
I was with them in the (very) early 70s and it seems a bit unlikely. Anyone know anymore, and if it is true?
mushroomman:
[it was only a couple of days later while I was waiting for a boat in Rotterdam that I bumped in to old Billy “ Jock ” McDonald and I told him that I had met another Scotsman called Frank White. Jock said he had met Frank back in the seventies and he must have had some balls to go back to Iran to get his trucks at that time.]
Hi steve i spoke to frank today and he said the drivers who flew to teheran to collect the trucks were Geordie Scott, John Mackie , Andy Crombie, John Shaw Mackie, Bobby erskine, Robert Hamilton(RIP). If you know any off them im sure they will have a few tales to tell aswell.
Hi Colin
I didnt no Bob Erskine worked for Frank I used to be a subbie on and off for Thomas Smith Junior in 1988/89 and bob used to work there then. That was a good company to work for sadly the name was swallowed up into the TDG group. Bob works at Pollocks not seen for a few years I think he could be in the office there.
Cheers Scania 142

Hi scania142
I only met Bob once and that would be the mid nineties in volvo broxbourne. He was working at TGB at that time. I have met geordie scott on many occassions and once did a trip to samara in the winter with him. It was his 1st trip to russia and we spent 3 days at the border of poland-bellarussia with the temp sitting around minus 25. John shaw mackie with us aswell and we loaded back on christmas eve, christmas day with manhole covers from cheboksary and got customs clearance on boxing day. Was a very interesting trip for all!! We made front page of a few national papers for our exploits
Geordies 1st time to russia and we had fun at the border. We with many others from all over europe waited for three days to clear customs. Anybody who was there at that time will remember it was indeed a very cold winter for a long period. It is one of the few trips i remember very clearly from start to finish. The sun had the details of destination slightly wrong as we were going to Novo Kubeshevs Samara 1000KM or so east of Moscow
It was just another normal russian winter but to us it was a seriously hard trip because of the problems we had on the road
Colin,
Not sure if you would remember me but i was working for Transamerica when you were working for Frank, He had a Tri Tilt on hire from us and one of the things that stick in my mind was that he had us fit a swing out toilet seat to the trailer, It brought a smile to a few peoples faces but im sure it was practical.
When you next speak to Frank, send him my regards and would love to have a chat with him, I’ll PM you my contact number so he/you can get in touch.
