as strange as it may sound…i could ride my motorcycle all day long and not feel a thing(once id managed to get myself on it),but i simply couldnt walk at the other end
Yes the same here, riding the VFR can actually give some relief when the back goes into spasam.
I had a discectomy in 2000 in Ireland. I had the searing leg pain and the lying on the floor like a dead dog syndrome too.
L3 and L4 discs were prolapsed due to dragging a 1 ton pallet of melons! The funny thing is I never had backache. Just leg pain. I do have backache now though, but the sciatica has gone. The only warning I had from the surgeon was that my foot may go limp after surgery. Luckily it didn’t.

I used to take the missus out on the bike right up to 8mths pregnant, at 6mths+ she reckoned it was the only way to get comfortable !
I’m 40 and have had it for 2 years. It went for a good 9 months or so but came back with a vengeance in August. I have no trouble at weekends as I am quite an active person but during the week…never known pain like it. I’m a night tramper on fridges so get very little exercise all week. I’ve found when driving that making circular motions with the hips (like a small hoola hoop motion) whilst leaning forward slightly on the steering wheel does help quite a bit. I’ve also found that its not as bad when I’m driving flat floor cabs i.e. magnum or actros, as I can give the left leg a good stretch when I need to.
I do take Naproxen and co-codamol quite often but try to only take them when it is unbearable as my body doesn’t take pills well.
Get some Devils Claw…keep taking the required dosage for several weeks to get it inot your system and you might well find it helps, i t did for me and several chaps i’ve suggested it too…one of which was a really decent security bloke where i worked at the time, ex steelworker, he could barely walk round the compound and was like me couldn’t straighten up (sod me if you sneezed or coughed it was a agonizing stabbing pain from arse to foot), couple of weeks later after Devils Clawing he was romping round the place.

strange,is`nt it i once watched the racing at croft on my hands and knees…in absolute agony.then rode home totally pain free
It seems quite a few have either a major problem or the symptoms of 1 coming on?
How many do other excercise outside work? If so, what do you do?
I cycle, swim, do pull ups, press ups, and touch my palms flat to the floor - the last 3 every day, the others most weekends.
I’m 35 (36 in a few weeks ) and have a knackered left wrist from a nasty bike accident, knackered right wrist from a nasty off roading car roll down a hill hand through windscreen accident, and have had my neck lock up with mad spasm’s which made me look like the monster from Notre Dam, but my back has been ok so far…
Just wondering, is it lazyness, lack of time outside working hours to do anything, or is it just something that IS going to happen no matter what?

I suffer terrible with this , all made worse by a very badly broken left leg 6 years ago, I’ve tried all sorts , the axor in work near cripples me by Friday , any way try looking for somebody that does the bowen technique, it really helps , better than a chiropractor & much cheaper , also your bed can be a cause, I found when I stayed at the inlaws after a few days I was pain free , one night back in my bed in pain again , its down to the mattress , forget memory foam , you need an individual pocket sprung mattress , there may be q cost but its worth it , people spend thousands on cars that they only spend a little time in yet a bed they want to spend the least , I got one from Bensons for beds , the savoy range , best buy ever ,makes a huge difference , & don’t forget to stretch in the mornings , sit down legs straight out in front , back straight & lean forward , don’t over do it , just gently, I do this at the top of the stairs to help getting up , also stand up feet together, put hands between knees , keep back & shoulder straight, then push stomach up as if your trying to go through your back , again take it easy , but definitely look at the bed , I’m 32 and was suffering terribly, things are a lot easier now …
Totally agree about the mattress but I do prefer a memory foam 1 but maybe that is what I am used to after 20 + years with 1 but have a good luck round a try them in the shops that is why they have the plastic on the bottom ( for your feet to rest on )

Have you notied how those who’ve never done a days work in their lives skip around like bloody spring lambs.
My problems stem from years spent over car bonnets fixing other peoples problems in between the usual 70hour+ weeks we had to put in years ago in order to raise a family before the state took on that tiresome burden.
Hard work does kill you in direct contrast to the usual saying…usually quoted by the idle rich together with that other gem ‘money doesn’t make you happy’'…no indeed but its a bloody sight better way of being miserable, i’m yet to see the rich man who doesn’t want more, as seen daily by our celebs and ex prime ministers who after lottery income years in showbiz or politics still slip adverts, voicovers, talks and directorships etc in for yet more of that horrible stuff that makes 'em so unhappy poor loves…
Narr i no a few who have had the op and it made no diffrence at all and most wish they hadnt had it done, when they said 60/40 of not walking again i was ment to say not walking correctly and having to walk most tikmes with a stick…after i had heald up… again the pain gets you down and no one can say how it is until you have it and even then some get it ok some get it worse etc, i just watch what i do now sometimes i may over do it and i no with in a couple of hours max… but sod the op it aint for me that, but i pity those who have it man do i pity them
I was told 80/20 for the op and have to say with the exception of when I get down on the floor to help my youngest daughter (5 yrs old) with jigsaws etc I have no problem at all, it just takes me longer to get up and down. The pain is still there nowhere near as bad just feels like a bit of back ache now at its worst. Have to say for me the op was a blessing as for diazepan took that on a Monday and didnt wake uptil the Wednesday and felt shocking never again no matter what the pain

My dad is exactly the same as this his only complaint is there is nowhere on his bike for his blue badge!

Common problem amongst drivers and office worker.
Sitting down all the time puts pressure on the discs.
I’ve had lower back disc/sciatica problems for around 4 yrs now.
Mri scan showed 2 discs herniated and the lower disc impinging on the nerves.
I’ve had physio which didn’t work for me.
An osteopath worked for me,he put me on an inversion table and sorted me some relief that way.
If you can find anything high enough to hang from and let your body weight pull you down this helps as it stretches out the spine.
I’ve had various strong painkillers for nerve pain and overall pain,a lot of these you can not drive when you are on them.
If you do you are a fool.If you have an accident you will be in the brown stuff.
I pushed and pushed for proper relief and in the end after telling my doctor you can’t just keep on prescribing me lucid painkillers that leave me unable to drive I need to see a consultant for injections. He relented and referred me to a consultant.
In turn the consultant reviewed my scans and put me down for spinal injections.
I have had 3 of those (you get 3 over 6 weeks).
The injections fill the spinal space with painkillers ,anti inflammatory and some other stuff I forget.Basically if you have a disc movement which is likely to nip the nerves you shouldn’t feel any pain and suffer another bout of sciatic discomfort.
Whilst you have the injections you have an 80% chance of the discs going back in,that said there is still a 20% chance they won’t.
Google Caudal epidural injection.
As for driving,if you suffer from this and it is affecting your life you need to change your job or duties.Sitting on your arse all day is doing it no good, you are putting immense pressure on discs that are already herniated and they will only get worse.
I changed my duties to shunting as I’m out of the cab all the time,it’s worked for me and my back feels stronger for it.
It was something I tried to see if it would work out for me,it has.
Some people can’t see how shunting would work with all the curtain pulling but my back muscles aren’t knackered,it’s my discs.Still have to be careful and not do stupid movements or jumping out the cab off the cat walk etc.Have to be a lot more careful and look after yourself.
As I’ve been told before, you only get one back, look after it.
