Sciatica

Well each to their own, and like you I was at the end in being almost unable to walk, lay, sit … anything, but a kindle nuro surgeon nipped in there and had it sorted in no time.
Never be 100% of course, but can now live a reasonable life without to much pain (yes I know you get used to it)

I’ve never suffered from a ‘glass back’ but I once bent down to spit in the bowl whilst brushing my teeth one morning & spent the next 2wks in absolute agony.

If you truly genuinely suffer with back problems then you have my sympathy.

I’m a biker, I have my own battle scars which cause me trouble, in particular my knee’s & left wrist. Most of my biker mates have long term injuries to some degree, injuries which affect our daily live’s. Only 2 have serious back issues & both have championed chiropractor’s over physio’s, surgery & painkillers.

One mate suffered for over 3yrs & at times he could hardly walk. He was smoking some serious weed to try to combat the pain until a chiropractor lay him face down on bench & started stretching his leg !

my stepson is only 20,
and suffered really bad back probs for a while, has just been to doctors and his last course of treatment hasnt done any good ,and doc has advised him to give up any manual work, and claim disability(obviously he’s gutted at this)
but they are going to remove a disk, and hopefully he might be able to work to some degree.
both him and his older brother played rugby(his brother still does) and this is most likely the cause…

Take more breaks and stretch your legs.

ive had 2 disc operations first time i coudnt get out off my lorry coudnt walk for 2 years then saw neurosgeon and had 4 discs removed fine after that no more pain but still had sciatica then cant stand up long due to loss off feeling too right foot move on 5 years mowing the lawn it goes again another op and another 4 discs removed nerve ends tidied up any more go and ill be ■■■■■■ the second time is 5 years ago and im delivering gas bottles at the moment and have been for the lst 5 years very heavy work ie 400 off 400 on no help but well paid ifmy back goes again i m ■■■■■■

So, learn this lesson folks. Don’t play rugby unless you’re happy to live off the welfare state  .

How much £money would we save if rugby were banned?

Speaking from personal experience the first thing to find out is if it’s disc trouble or not which needs X Rays and scans to confirm it.If it is then you need to tell the guvnor. At which point most employers won’t accept the risk and it’s the end of the job. :frowning:

Remember that chiropractors are not regulated nor need to be qualified any one can set up as one

Me I have a fractured back prolapsed disc excessive wear spondulitius ( sp) carpel tunnel syndrome I did go see my Dr then to pain management which sent me for a MRI scan found all this out have had physio which helps as well as pain killers

All of the above has been documented in the Health forum

So yep know the pain you are suffering

Sounds a bit iffy for both the guvnor’s and the employee’s responsibility under the health and safety at work act  .

If that’s right surely it would effectively mean that no one would be covered either privately or through social security unless it’s put them on their back literally. In all other cases they’d be forced to work with it because fitness to work would just be governed by being able to physically do the job without regard to risk of further injury which is what put me out of the job years ago based on the health and safety at work act.

Yes & you used to have to tell your employer about old injuries but seem you dont now Human rights I think

I thought for a while that I was the only one suffering this pain , its hard to explain exactly how or where it hurts & I’ve been seen in some very unusual positions making some odd noises to try & combat it , doc has always said its just muscle pain & stiffness from the injury years ago but, I know what I feel & when I have a pain behind my left eye that seems to run down my neck through my shoulder blade & lower back to my thigh & knee & like a spike sticking through my heel , there’s more to it … I’m looking at giving pillates q go …

The worst pain I have EVER endured!
Like a hot wire from by bum cheek to my big toe.
Caused by shovelling earth from one side to the other,by swivelling my back.
The quack gave me pain killers for two weeks that did no good at all. Then I phoned the on line physio, result.
After explaining my symptons, posted me some exercises to do,then went to the walk in physio who really gave me a workout!
In short, sciatica is caused by a prolapsed disc in the vertibrae trapping the sciatic nerve, and what you have to do is open the vertibrae in the lower back so the prolapsed disc can return to it’s original state.
THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN IMMEDIATELY!
The way to do this is to do press ups,but keep your hips on the floor, you have to arch your back as much as possible to open up the vertibrae.Ten press ups at a time.
For emergency relief, lie on your stomach with your upper body supported on your elbows. This gives a gentle arching of the spine which will take some pressure off the sciatic nerve.
Do this at least twice a day,and in my case after a couple of weeks it was getting easier, but it’s a long job.
Now after over two years,I just have pins and needles in the toes of my right foot.
I still do the exercises usually now only once a day,but there is no magic cure, surgery can be suggested but is not always successful,I’ve spoken to people who’ve had it and finished up worse than before.
If you have a local walk in physio,go there!
My physio said she had had it and still did the exercises every day as she did not want it again.
Once you have had it,it is a weakness that can come back if you are not careful.

So now human rights overrides elf and safety to the point of not reporting a medical issue to the guvnor, which if aggravated enough further enough, has the potential to put someone in a wheelchair for life.No thanks luckily for me I went under the old ways of looking at the issue.

There’s also a difference between disc prolapse caused by degeneration (which means the disc/s involved and others will get worse not better over time) and in which case continuing exposure to high risk type work will just aggravate the situation and bring that point forward. It’s that difference which needs to be sorted out and then taken into account and certainly was in my case.

In which case the advice I had was they could operate on the discs which had gone but it still wouldn’t make my spine any stronger overall in the foreseeable future,or just be careful with what I do with it.Both options of which meant the end of driving trucks unfortunately which seems to have worked ok.But luckily for me I wasn’t reliant on the state incapacity benefit system.

I suffer from this ‘occasionally’, meaning that sometimes i can barely walk for a couple of weeks at a time when it goes and by ■■■■ does it hurt! I blame all the years of multi drop…carrying more that weight that was a comfortable lift from a low level and just picking the gear up of the floor without bending the knees…long before all this ‘cover the companies arse’ with manual handling came to light. It went one night when I were struggling with a particularly tight red-line…you know the one…u have to bend right into it…■■■■■■■ thing! Other occasions are sitting on the edge og the bed in the morning, lift one leg up to put in me strides and bang…on the floor on me hands & knees, ■■■■■■ & jeffing in pain and the only other occupant in the house at the time was the mother in law. Yep…she came up into the bedroom to be confronted by my bare arse and a couple of free swinging nads! Another time, I was in the garden just spraying some weed killer…was on the floor for half an hour or so before wifey came back from the shops. Have visited the usual specialists but have had no change in it. I now have a constant ‘niggle’ in the right side of my lower back…(I can feel the lump) feels more of a cramp if anything. My bottom 3 discs are shot and a few years ago, an operation was talked about…with no guarantee it would be successful! It is a pain I would not wish on many people as it comes on so sudden. I was told a few years ago (NHS Direct) that the best way of easing it is to lay on your side with the legs bent…this opens up the discs and will not only relieve the pinching effect but may help in the nerve dropping back into place quicker. My 1st Chiropractor said it was probably a Hamstring and gave me some exercises to do…nearly bloody finished me off.

I get it now and then,i have a partial slipped disc in the lower back, i also get pain what feels like it’s in my hip socket, sleeping on my sides seems to cause it, it lasts for around a week, i also have a knee joint that’s on it’s way out,i dislocated it over 10 years ago, recently it started to randomly lock when sitting down, or whilst walking, i dare not run as it may pack in all together,
As for the wallet pain, Ive had that a few times too,the old merc actrosses where good for that, with the hard seating and bunks they used to fit in them

as strange as it may sound…i could ride my motorcycle all day long and not feel a thing(once id managed to get myself on it),but i simply couldnt walk at the other end

Exactly this. It is the arched back type thing that helps, although I did struggle with the gears, rear brakes don’t matter. Best thing I did was change my bed
