Scania handbrakes

Sorry to bump an old thread, but this is first thread I found after searching.
In our yard yesterday, I hear a bit of commotion, turn to see one of our Scania rigids start rolling down the yard. Shunter driver managed to jump in and stop it a foot away from impact. But the frightening thing was the hand brake was on! He backed it up and re-applied the handbrake, but it would not work.
It had been parked for 5 hours before this happened. Just lucky that it went while it was in our yard. Hate to think what would of happened if the driver was parked up for the night in a layby somewhere.

Sorry to bump an old thread,

So why didn’t you just start a new one? :unamused:

The only problem I gave ever had with s Scania park brake was it worked when I released it so unfortunately I had to drive the [zb] thing.

Most forums prefer that you search for an existing topic that’s relevant, rather than start a new topic. Force of habit on my part.

It makes future searches easier as it reduces the amount of results that come up. If only all new topic starters did it. (been guilty as charged myself sometimes). Thanks Clunk.

That may be OK on occasions but an old thread may have page after page of rubbish with post after post re quoted & quoted again etc. when a new thread would have been much easier - 3 years old this one

EDIT!!!

Just read new thread STOBART…£7.20 ph are they takin ■■■■! would definitely be one to have used search :unamused: :unamused:

How old is the wagon?

Not sure on this particular wagon, but they are all less than 4 years old.

Hmm surprising.

Had FL10 roll away before, due purely to excess wear on the drive axle brakes, luckily felt it move before exiting, never had it happen on a Scanny though.

Heard of one or two cases of hill hold (what that rubbish is doing on a lorry i have yet to understand) being used on any make, and handbrake being blamed for subsequent damage.

It can make life awkward when connecting air lines, but much prefer the parking brake sending pressure down the service line.

I had a vehicle roll away in the snow. Not sure of the make (18 Tonner - with bowser on the back and trailer) - it was for a film set with a huge caravan on the back.

Park break on the hill was rolling backwards on the snow, Press footbrake and it stopped. I had to drain the air out of the unit so it didn’t roll away whilst awaiting farmer Giles with his tractor.

Can’t say I’ve ever had a problem with a Scania handbrake, driven 3,4 and the current R series for longer than I care to remember…

I’d be having words with whoever services it, sounds like a fault / something out of adjustment tbh.

To have it rolling away in the snow is nothing unusual and will happen if you stop at slope with warm tires and just use the handbrake since it only applies to the drive wheels. Simplest solution to stop it happening is pulling out the safety switch
Located below the handbrake on a Scania with the text “Push to supply” Other makes it’s just a round knob.

hi new to site has any one had any problems with handbrakes on scania ie wagon not holding with handbrake on

Nope sorry, you have to pull it all the way down so it clicks and locks :stuck_out_tongue:
Are you sure u havent just forgot to put it on and are now looking for a way out??

I work for a large bulk haulier and we have had a few incidents of Scania’s moving whilst the hand brake is applied when tipping walking floor trailers on sloping ground (usually farms), as the load is walked off and the weight transfers from the king pin to the trailer the movement occurs. I drive a Volvo and it’s never happened to me, I’m not mechanically minded whatsoever but could it have something to do with the hand brake only braking the drive axle?

Surely if your tipping a walking floor trailer, you have got to keep edging forward as the load discharges?
As the load piles up the pressure is going to push the wagon forwards?
Cant do the back of the trailer/suspension any good if the handbrakes left on for the duration of tipping, can it?

Just because it’s a walking floor dosn’t mean it has to be bulk, the farmer would’nt be very happy if you let a load of 600kg fertiliser bags fall out the back door!

not at all

i had a accident and wagon was on a downhill slope i got out to press the buzzer to open the gate and about 2 mins lata wagon started rolling forward and when sum one jumped in it the handbrake was applied
