Would I be right in saying that the Wynn’s and the Tufmix units have the Scammell drive axle ? Cheers Bewick.
It looks like it Dennis by the shape of the halfshaft, Was the reduction gearing in the diff on those models ? Regards Larry.

Bad to say Larry,as I wasn’t very clued up about Scammells, but from memory wasn’t the Scammell diff a big horizontal round sort off shape ? Wonder why they dropped the Scammell drive axle? Was it past it’s sell by date and antiquated do you think Larry? A bit like some of the members on this site !!! Well if the cap fits “H” you must wear it my Son !!! Cheers Dennis.
The Scammell axel was shaped a bit like a rolling pin , to get the diff out the axel had to be split in two, A bit like the old Ford Type, Regards Larry

Hi, 9x20 & Trev.H
Have to agree with you about noise and the Invincible with a ■■■■■■■ in. One benefit of them was you didn’t get any earache from 'er indoors cos you couldn’t hear her for a while!
One firm I worked for,ran a lot of old Gardner engined ERF’s gave it’s driver’s ear defenders . I said if I was deaf you wouldn’t employ me, Make the trucks quieter and save my hearing.
Cheers Bassman
Does anybody know why the Routeman cab has a step in the front mudguard and the Handyman driver has to make do with standing on the wheel trim to mount up?
The axle was set further back on the Routeman I think you will find TM.
Thanks for that John, now I look closer I can see the difference.
I have driven both in my time and never noticed until I was reading this thread a while ago.
Early 70’s I parked on Market street Islington to go to my digs on Cally Road. I was stepping on the wheel nuts on the nearside to get my case out of the passenger side and slipped off breaking my ankle.
I was told I couldn’t claim even though the wheel trim was missing but I got the workshop manual out of the engineers office and the trim is called a “step trim”, I won my case and bought a new car ( Triumph GT6) out of the proceeds plus 14 weeks pay while I was off work.
Just a couple of photos taken in the late 80s/early 90s when I worked at Cawsey Commercials, Launceston, Cornwall. I took the photos before it went back into service after I had refurbished and repainted the bodywork. If I remember rightly, this was not long after Leyland had become Leyland Daf and proper signwriting was still the norm. I know this vehicle started life as a tipper and was still in use up until a few weeks ago, by a coach company, towing scrap coaches to the breakers yard. It has now been sold on,in a rather sorry state, hopefully to be restored to it’s former glory.
