G.Burgess of Westerham,Kent unloading roof tiles.

This is the last one that was rebuilt with the extended chassis, rolls 290 fuller box and raised cab. It was based upon the L reg one pictured with the TOE trailer in this forum.

MOC:

This Octopus was the “star” 8 wheeler at Brady’s,it pulled a trailer for more-or-less all it’s time on the fleet apart from it’s final months, prior to been withdrawn, when it hauled Tuborg lager tanks into London from Felixstowe. But for 95%+ of it’s working life it ran at 32 ton GVW,and, on many occaisions at “a bit more” than 32 ton. !!The Scammell only ran solo as it was neither equipped or capable of operating with a trailer, well not the way Brady’s expected a waggon and trailer to operate !! Cheers Bewick.

Good to see the G.Burgess & Son Scammells on here. Any drivers from Kent must remember these which were run up to 1988, although the last two were highly modified with extended chassis to cope with deep pin trailers, 290 rolls engines 9 speed fuller boxes and the cabs were raised and mounted on a suspended sub frame. However, I did not shed any tears when the last one was replaced by a brand new Foden 4000 series with a 400 CAT. I will add some more pictures of the Scammells in due course. One has been preserved and at present lives in South Wales. Another languishes in the yard awaiting preservation.

HI, Did you drive the handyman that is pulling the toe trailer?? would be great to see any scammell pics that you have got. When you go past the yard and look in you can also see a blue and white Routeman cab on the floor.

Hi

My Dad had that one new in 1973 and I passed my test on it as soon as I was 21. It was normally driven by Gordon Taylor. The blue cab in the yard came off a J reg handyman that was totally rebuilt and modified and re registered in 1979 as a V reg. The L reg one with the TOE trailer was rebuilt and modified and re registered with a Q registration in 1984.

The Scammell at the back of the yard is a C reg which we had new in 1965. The last driver on it let it run away and it hit a wall. We repaired the cab and put in a late tyre dash as it broke all the original dash up. I have kept the blue cab to put on the C reg one if I ever get time to restore it.

HI, have you still got a donor chassis for the blue cab? :sunglasses:

Hi the chassis the blue cab came off was used as the basis for GKO146V. This had a late type cab fitted which we bought as a written off cab from Sparshatts at Croydon. It came off a 1973 trunker from Watneys brewery. It had suffered nearside damage. We repaired the cab and fitted it to a suspended sub frame. GKO is still running and owned by a gentleman in South Wales. He has recently replaced the 290 Rolls we fitted with a 220 Rolls.

I have a picture of GKO with our tipping trailer, I will get it put on here hopefully soon.
