Mark R:
When i was a kid my dad drove for a local tipper firm in Sittingbourne. They only had six wheelers at the time but about 1975/6 they bought their first eight wheeler. It was a brand new Scammell Routeman (LKR 72P) and my old man got it. I spent many happy school holidays in that motor and it was soon joined by another. I only wish i’d taken some photos of it…even many years after his retirement dad still says it was one of the best tippers he ever had.
Hello Mark R, would love to know the name of the firm your dad drove for when he had the Routeman, We are always on the look out for new scammell stuff and pics, Nice that you can remember the Reg of it, A good old Kent Reg!! cheers scamm73
My dad drove for Ash Suppliers ( Sittingbourne ) Ltd. As the name would suggest they were involved with hauling Ash and PFA dust ( Pulverized Fuel Ash ). The first eight wheeler was dads Scammell, followed by another Scammell and various other british made lorries Guys ERFs Leylands etc etc. Dads Scammell LKR 72P met an unfortunate end im affraid. While another driver had it one day, the ram somehow failed and the body dropped from half way up, braking the chassis and it was written off. Ash Suppliers ceased trading in the late eighties by which time they had mainly artics. I have a few photos but sadly none of either of the two Scammells.

Hi mark R, Yeah i can remember seeing them about, my dad would sometimes collect back loads for TRANSAG, can remember seeing them in the plant loading at the same time, would love to see any pics you got and will def keep an eye out for any. cheers scamm73
Hi all…Yes, Ash Suppliers did run with CRG Transag. In fact Transag had quite a few Scammells themselves. They were light blue and their yard was in Gouge Avenue Northfleet. The ERF B Series in the photo was driven by Jim Greaves reg no BKR 234T and was soon joined by another B Series GKM 804V, this was the last lorry to wear the original Ash Suppliers livery as the next tippers were Leyland T45s and had a new blue & white livery.

does anybody remember working/driving or seeing these on the road■■?
yes, we had 4 28tonners at Pitchmastic’s Ball eye quarry in Cromford Derbyshire where i drove one. reg CRB 157L .It was in the mid 70’s.Me and my mate Trev, he drove another one.We carried filler dust for making pitch blocks at our factory in Sandiacre near Nottingham.Trevs wagon had a leyland gearbox fitted, (crash box). It took me a while to get used to it,when i drove it from time to time.
The other two used to run on road stone out of the quarry. They were a world apart from the Albion reivers/clydesdales we had.You could keep warm in winter and cool in summer. The radio’s were brill. I can go on for ever!!
Can anyone find out where this Scammell was registered to? My Dad seems to think this used to run out of Garnet Street dept in Bradford. This was one of 2 Routemans they had. If anyone could do a reg.no search and find it’s origins I would appreciate it.
Greetings,All. Re. the Scammell unit Reg.No. MGC 951 L,it looks like an ex.Shell unit. They all had black oil trailers on their back and were fitted with the Rolls Royce Eagle engine. For their day, they were one of the best for the job.The middle axle lifted to give more traction. Also, after a LAD cabbed Leyland, they were heaven. I drove one for ages on Motor Spirit. Regards,900x20.
Good to see the G.Burgess & Son Scammells on here. Any drivers from Kent must remember these which were run up to 1988, although the last two were highly modified with extended chassis to cope with deep pin trailers, 290 rolls engines 9 speed fuller boxes and the cabs were raised and mounted on a suspended sub frame. However, I did not shed any tears when the last one was replaced by a brand new Foden 4000 series with a 400 CAT. I will add some more pictures of the Scammells in due course. One has been preserved and at present lives in South Wales. Another languishes in the yard awaiting preservation.

Were you at Pitcho’s when Lenny Frost and Dave Hall drove for them and that chap got killed in the crusher, I think that Central are running from there now with a fleet of Scania eight legger’s.
Tarmac (sorry Pete) had IIRC 7 Routemans in the 70’s split between Cawdor and M.Peak.
Here is a poor pic of one parked in Cromford marketplace with possibly a Reiver just up the hill.
Drivers most probably in the Tors Cafe.
We parked all over here then, you would cause chaos now.
The late Peter Ryder and Herbert Thompson had them at M.Peak
seem to think Tarmac Agg.had a couple but probably the memory playing trick’s.
Mike.
Yes Mike, apology accepted, Tarm*c agg did have some short wheelbase ones based up at Longcliffe. I think that they had the sprung taildoors for spreader work? Harry Evans had some as well, they used to come into Ballidon with them, as did Charlie Webster’s from Wirksworth with powder tanks fitted.
I used to work on one when I lived down country, it was a tipper owned by Sonning Haulage near Reading and I seem to recall the cab being a bit basic inside, though no worse than a Foden S36!

HI, Did you drive the handyman that is pulling the toe trailer?? would be great to see any scammell pics that you have got. When you go past the yard and look in you can also see a blue and white Routeman cab on the floor.

Hi
My Dad had that one new in 1973 and I passed my test on it as soon as I was 21. It was normally driven by Gordon Taylor. The blue cab in the yard came off a J reg handyman that was totally rebuilt and modified and re registered in 1979 as a V reg. The L reg one with the TOE trailer was rebuilt and modified and re registered with a Q registration in 1984.
The Scammell at the back of the yard is a C reg which we had new in 1965. The last driver on it let it run away and it hit a wall. We repaired the cab and put in a late tyre dash as it broke all the original dash up. I have kept the blue cab to put on the C reg one if I ever get time to restore it.
