Question----I realise that the Albion back end was light but I often wondered why Scammell never used the heavy Leyland double drive set up the same as Leyland used on the Octopus.Cheers Bewick.

Well Dennis some years ago a fellow haulier had some of these lighter axled ones, And told me that they were 28t gross, & tared off at 8 tonnes hence a 20 t. payload, Plus the had higher ground clearance if this is anything to go by, Regards Larry.

Your right there Larry,the tipper game was alien to me and I think that the Scammell was a great motor for that job and as you say the Albion axles had a higher ground clearance but IMHO I always thought they were a bit lightweight but they obviously did the job eh! They looked fine on the solo Octopus 8 wheeler flats but I recall my old pal Eric saying to me when I was his mate “look at them little Albion axles on that Octopus,pull the arse out of them with 27 ton up” but that was many years ago during the happy years mate !!! big job , is your dad still around . i knew him for many years going back to when he was on the milk lorries . lost touch ( as we do ) over the years when i went on distance work . regards , dave
We ended up with all the Buxton Limestone Scammells and RE29 Reivers at Topley Pike, they were in Limmer colours. They were in a right state. bull bars and all sorts off ■■■■ fitted. We went right through them, had then insulated, and made a decent fleet out of them.
A lot of hard work. but the overtime was awesome! Bonkey’s dad drove there at that time ( Charlie), looked like a 70’s pop star, cracking bloke.

hi rigsby sadly no dad passed away in 2006 . Still got all the good memories of the varied trucks he drove tho ,
i’m very sorry to hear that bigjob , he was the kind of chap who would be difficult to dislike . he was like the rest of us at grin , mad as a box of frogs , going down into macc in silent seventh in the old atkis was one of the escapades we tried . i left grin before the limmer takeover and only saw him in passing after that . another sad loss to us all . dave
