Can any of you lads answer this question, why was it that when they stopped making the routeman and went over to the constructor that some of them had scammell on the name board and some had leyland■■? Was it to do with engine?? Early or first ones out?? Or good old choice if you ordered one from new?? Many thanks.

Thanks for putting that to bed, I knew one of you lads would know the answer. Whilst here I think it’s long over due that this great thread had a routeman Pic update!!
They never seemed as popular here in Derbyshire although Tarmac’s agg division had a few short wheelbase ones for spreading. Harry Evans and Pitchmastic also ran some locally, however when I lived in the Thames Valley they were very common, maybe factory location ‘up the road’ in Watford was a factor in that like Fodens/Sandbach in the Peak District? Good to see pics of them.
Pete.

Good evening all, I think you could be right about in how the factory played a major part, I can remember how the routeman was the most prominent tipper around London’s roads. They seem to go on and on and you would always see them having many different owners before they came to the end of their working life.
Great to see this thread again! Keep it up!
Cheers.
Pete would the short wheelbase route mans be 26 tonnes gvw just a thought
