Scammell Crusaders

There used to be a Scammell Crusader on scrap to South Wales in the late '70’s that used to park up just off the Monmouth roundabout on Dixon lane , I’m really after any photo’s or info on this truck as I think it caught fire one night and was never seen again. Cheers…

This one normally pulled a low-loader. It was powered by a 290 ( I think ) Roller and was badged as an Amazon. I seem to remember reading that Amazon chassis were something to do with Thorneycroft. Cheers Haddy.

Another Internet find:

Found this picture of MVH 747P from just before I bought it:

And after spotting that old beauty (above), I thought I’d dig out a few of my old Crusader pics from the 80’s

Couple of heavy hitters to begin;

Got this one out of a book I have called Leyland Heritage.0

Is that the one that Astran used on ONE trip? . . early model, cross ply tyres.

Could well be mate. The one Astran had was a daycab 6x4 reg; MUR 501H, but there is no reg on the one pictured on here.

Hi Ash I would guess that would be the first “Crusader” as I cannot recall any before a “J” plate, was Astran used as a test for manufacturers being one of the few company’s who ran M/E at that time.

Harry they came after I had left most likely they were introduced when most of the office staff were recruited from university’s who had learnt everything from a book. When I was there all the young blokes in the office were trained by the manager Ted Fitzpatrick and they all went on to be managers or directors at heavy haulage firms as he used to send them out on the wagons to see how things were done including nights away not just local work.
I can’t recall seeing their tilts either so I must have been driving around with my eyes shut as well.
Cheers Johnnie

I’m sure I read somewhere that it was a prototype that they sent to Astran the Crusaders weren’t really readily available till 71 iirc.

Brilliant MOC! You’ve made my day. My mate Phil Taylor drove this delivering boats around the UK and France. They were from down my neck-of-the-woods in East Sussex,

Regards,

Mark.

I agree, this is why anyone with any photos should post them if they can, it doesn’t matter if you know anything about the pic, just put it on, a lot of the pics I have posted are just random shots but there is always a chance it’ll bring back memories for someone, I have had a lot of response from people recognising something in the pic be it a wagon/cafe/boat etc, they might just be in the back-ground & not the main feature of the pic, but I know I get more nastalgic as the years go by! So check your old drawers/cupboards/lofts/boxes etc for pics & put them on, you could make someones day!
Regards
Chris
