yes i did say i had maggie to thank for the fact i could buy MY council house.where did i say i did buy it?
tell us why you voted conservative carryfast…
british leyland staff at the brand new rover sd1 factory in the seventies striking because the coats they had to wear on the line were an “unacceptable shade of brown” FFS !!! .another example of our brothers in the unions trying to ensure better wages and conditions for us working men eh carryfast?
Regardless of wether you bought ‘your’ council house or not the way I read it you seemed to be saying that the fact that Maggie allowed you (and many others who did) to buy it was a good thing not a bad thing .
I didn’t vote conservative in the 1979 election but also didn’t vote Labour because their policy was no different.Ironically I only voted conservative this time because in this area it’s that or we’ll get the LibDems and those zb’s just want to cover what remains of the countryside in houses for immigrants and more wannabe tories who want a cheap council house so they can flog it for a profit later and as before Labour are just Tories anyway.
I’m not surprised to hear another Sun type story about union members deciding to throw away a load of wages on a pointless strike for no good reason.I usually treat those types of stories the same way as I did those concerning the miners in the 1984 strike supposedly striking for no reason at all and that there were no plans whatsoever to close most of the mines as Scargill was saying.
andrew.s:
i work with someone who was a miner during the strike,i asked him ages ago if he crossed the picket line,he said of course he did as he had a family to keep.
he also said the most millitant of strikers were all moonlighting in other jobs anyway.
look up the miners strike thread on the old trucks board on this forum, plenty of “scabs” on there.lots of hauliers and drivers made plenty of money out of the strike-good luck to em
Of course they did. The mines where always going to close. I too personally know people who drove through the pickets, some regret it some don’t. Funny thing is though, there still plenty of coal there and we burn it every day.
andrew.s:
do you think they deserved to have paving slabs thrown off bridges through their windscreens as “a scab is a scab”?
I don’t have a thought on it either way, you takes your chances and gets what you get. Just like everyone else.
andrew.s:
hang you on,i’ve thought of something the unions have done for working class people like me-
they installed Ed Milliband as leader of the labour pary, thus ensuring we dont have a labour government for at least as long as he is leader. he’s as unelectable as kinnock was ha ha ha ha.
Thats “New Labour”, conservative as the Conservatives, conservative as the Lib Dems. Capitalist without restriction, doing what Brussells decides. One pot and all that. Unions and Labour party where infiltrated years ago by the follow the money brigade. A scab is a scab, don’t make excuses for them we know them. They’re still scabs.

I think that what happened in 1984 just proved that it’s a self preservation society and it’s a waste of time for some union members to try to make things better while other workers are just interested in their own situation.
No wether someone is a scab or not it’s never worth using violence to try to win a dispute. The miners should have asked for support for a general strike from the TUC and if they didn’t get it they should have given up and called it a day before going out on strike.Either a strike is solid enough to win it without large scale picketing and violence or it’s not worth trying to win it at at all.The scabs won in 1984 and we’re seeing the results on the economy now.
Carryfast:
So let’s just carry on paying unproductive zb’s like bankers and MP’s a fortune out of the zb’d economy that they’ve run into the ground and to add insult to injury the zb’s can keep on telling everyone, who’s earning a lot less, that they have to earn even less and pay more in taxes, while those fat cats keep on paying themselves more and reducing their own tax burden because in the ‘global financial meltdown’ we’re all in this together.
No one else here seems too concerned about the fat cats, even the government can’t or won’t control bankers bonuses, and here is everyone saying that a driver earning £36,000 should take a cut, whilst the bosses will use the savings to upgrade their Jaguars!
not so daft that mrs thatcher, once you had bought your home and perhaps had a morgage of some sort, well, now you are going 2 think twice ,at least, re striking ?
Perhaps we can put the politics to one side for a wee while. Politics, like religion, is many things to many people. I appreciate and acknowledge that fact.
Once again I ask, can those who oppose unions please tell me how we are to improve T & C’s and pay for drivers in this industry?
How are we to achieve this without sticking together?
I have noticed that some people take the view that if you dont like the pay and T & C’s you should look for work elsewhere.
To them I address this story and questions:-
When I was 18 (1964) and started driving lorry’s, the pay was £12.00 a week.
I am to understand that the union, The Scottish Commercial Motorman’s Association, should not have had negotiation’s with employers on behalf of it’s members and that the said members should have looked for work elsewhere?
Presumably, in your view, the pay, in those circumstances should still be £12.00 in Glasgow?
I await your views with interest.
