Scabs in Immingham

matamoros:
“Unions got the kicking they deserved but not before they’d [zb] the country and destroyed the industries where their members worked - shed loads of unemployed members but the Union leaders still live in mansions paid for by the members, even more self serving, nose in the trough, rectal sphincters than MPs.”

And there’s me thinking all these years that is was Maggie Thatcher and her cronies that f******d the country up.

The best paid driving jobs that I have ever had were in the 1970’s before she put the boot in.

Unions did get a bit too big for their boots but the working class of this country has a lot to thank unions for.

what planet are you on? “the working class of this country has alot to thank unions for”
such as?
i’m working class and cant think of anything the unions have done for me,except inconvenience me when they go on ■■■■■■ strike!!
i have maggie to thank for the fact i could buy my council house though :sunglasses:
get real man for gods sake.

Right now keeping a job or jobs is the priority.

Unions are great if and when they do WTF they’re supposed to do protecting workers BUT take reality into account rather than pushing their own political agenda.

I Understand the Immingham drivers have some justification for being ■■■■■■ off but I really don’t think they’re doing themselves any favours and I think it could all end in tears. Hopefully both sides can move enough to resolve things.

Would I cross a picket line…NO, but then my kids have left home, I don’t have a mortgage, have enough put by to survive for a while and can get work in other industries.

The NHS, the Minimum Wage, Maternity Leave, Old Age Pensions, abolution of child labour, all came about due to the influence of the unions.
Yes, Unions are not perfect.
That goes for employers as well.
Here in Scotland, the SNP Government made legislation to prevent Council Houses being sold.
Good for them!
Its not unions who go on strike, its their members. Democratically voted for by legislation.
If you have been inconvenienced thats unfortunate.
As for Thatcher, when she goes there will be singing and dancing in the streets of Scotland.

I don’t know what is going on at Immingham, but talking to the Wincanton drivers who bring DERV into our place from Kingsbury they have been told they are wanted to go from four on four off, to five on three off, have banked hours to lose the overtime and have a 4k cut in basic. If I was in their shoes I would be out on strike as well.

Or to put it another way Maggie nicked a load of housing that had been paid for by the public and then flogged it all off to the existing tenants at a subsidised price using taxpayers cash to make up the shortfall so that those council house tenants could then buy them cheap and then flog them privately at market prices.

All of which was great for those subsidised tenants using taxpayers cash to subsidise their cheap house purchase. But not so great for the taxpayers who subsidised them. Many of who were union supporters fighting for better wages so that they could look after themselves by saving a deposit to pay their own mortgages to buy their own houses at market rates at the same time as subsidising those council tenants’ cheap house purchases.

Also not so great for those coming after those original council tenants who then ended up on council waiting lists because they weren’t as lucky as those original tenants who effectively stole public housing for their own profit using taxpayers cash to do it.

All of which is a good reason to make sure that there’s no further social housing built to make sure that a load of Tory supporting commies don’t get the chance to make a profit off the backs of taxpayers money in the future. :unamused: :imp:

chicane:
Don’t get me wrong I would like to see those largely responsible for the current mess held to account (jailed and fined) and I can see absolutely no justification for executive pay levels being where they are. I’d remove all child benefit from those earning over 50k/pa and I’d beef up HMRC.

Having said that the reality is we are now deep in the financial ‘merde’ and sinking deeper, companies are going to the wall and large numbers of redundancies are announced daily so how come it hasn’t dawned on the Immingham drivers (on £36,000pa) that going on strike might not be a good idea.

You must’ve lived through a different '70s to me Thatcher was voted in because the Labour government was completely ineffective and the unions were running the country holding the rest of us hostage,

Bread shortages
Unburied bodies
Uncollected rubbish piling up in the streets
Power cuts on an almost daily business
National Coal Board having to pay ever increasing rates to miners who were almost perpetually on strike in spite of earning a ■■■■ sight more than anyone else
British Leyland see above not helped by weak management
British Steel see above not helped by weak management
British Rail see above not helped by weak management
British Shipbuilding see above not helped by weak management

But Scargil, McGahey et all came out of it OK so all’s well

Suggest you actually check the voting figures at the time of the 1979 election.Maggie didn’t get in by votes for her she got in because Labour voters gave up on the party and abstained. Not because of the strikes but because it was a supposed ‘Labour’ government that caused the need for strikes by failing to control prices while (attempting to) control incomes.

Also suggest you check how much miners were actually earning compared to the rest of industry in 1973.
£27 per week for doing a job that most people wouldn’t want to do and certainly worth more than driving a truck or working 40 hours per week in a factory. :unamused:

Most elections are lost rather than won, so what’s new. The only reason Labour ever held power in Westminster was due to the Scottish Labour vote, even though the way contituencies are shaped mean that Labour need much less of the total vote to win an election than the Tories. England is inherently Tory.

£27pw in '73 was over 2.5 times more than I was on as a GFW working more hours

and what was the result of all the strikes, where are the jobs in the Rhonnda now. If the company isn’t able to generate the income to cover the wages/pensions & overheads let alone leave a profit then the company fails and the jobs go…hardly rocket science.

Its already been said elsewhere that like many other haulage companies Wincanton’s finances don’t exactly inspire confidence and given the situation at Coryton I just question whether the drivers at Immingham are making a mistake.

Yes P&C in haulage can be crap but I would suggest they are generally pretty favourable compared to other industries. The working man has one major tool in his armoury and that is the withdrawal of labour whether by striking or moving on to another company or industry, both should be given serious consideration and not just follow the union officals like a flock of sheep in some notion of a ‘class war’ or be subjected to abuse and intimidation because they don’t agree or can’t afford to tow the union line.

I understand what your saying Alex, fair enough, with regards to the sale of council houses I would have said,Fine ,but for every one you sell you must build another one for rental which can’t be sold for X number of years, that would have slowed the selling process up as the sale prices would have had to be considerably more than what they were “flogged” off for.The big unions are now nothing more than Political machines basically dominated by the public sector emloyees, and they convieniently forget that they are there to serve the wider community and not,as they seem to believe, the other way round. As for “demorcratic” votes anything less than 75% turnout by the membership should IMO make the vote void ! Also.I would follow the Australian method and make it law that everyone eligable to vote in a General Election should have to this alone would surely throw up some different results,oh! and I’d adopt their approach on immigration also.GIVE SCOTLAND THEIR INDEPENDANCE,A.S.A.P.and put a stop to all this continuing nonsense ! Cheers Bewick.

So we’ve got so called free market self sufficiency supporters, who don’t agree with the welfare state, who say let’s make someone who’s working hard and buying their own house,at market price, who’s had to save up a deposit and has a mortgage round their neck to do it,who’s earning an ordinary wage no different to other workers in industry, also pay a load of tax to subsidise someone else who hasn’t saved up the deposit and who doesn’t want to pay a mortgage,to effectively be given a state subsidised house to live in at below market rent and then if they want they can then buy that house at below market price and can then sell it afterwards at market prices thereby making themselves a load of profit off the backs of those who had to buy their own place with no help from zb Maggie or anyone else.

What ‘actually’ happened during the 1970’s was massive price led inflation followed (rightly) by equivalent wage demands to keep the economy going. That was until a bunch of bankers supported by a Tory ‘Labour’ Party and then Thatcher’s lot decided to limit wages, supposedly to limit inflation and reduce prices, when what was actually needed was direct price controls, but that goes against Tory thinking concerning free markets but the hypocritical zb’s are always quite happy to see wages controlled for the workers as usual so they could keep more money for themselves.

The uncontrolled prices and controlled wages lot got their way and the result was recession and over 3 million unemployed.Which is where the economy is heading today for exactly the same reason and because of the trade deficit built up by the Tory idea of rigging the free labour market by getting rid of the domestic industries and using cheap foreign labour instead. :unamused: :imp:

While at the same time seeming to be having a go at union members for trying to maintain living standards and wages so that they don’t need to be dependent on the state to provide them with state subsidised housing which to add insult to injury was then effectively given away to those state subsidised tenants to make a profit for theselves on. :unamused:

he also said the most millitant of strikers were all moonlighting in other jobs anyway.
