I was delivering to the olympic site when they were starting the thing up, and I was told they would have to put a sniffer dog in my cab, before I was allowed in, I told him, no ■■■■■■■ chance mate, it’s ■■■■■■■ down, I bet you wouldn’t let a wet dog walk all over your bed,
I am (with my company’s blessing) going to get a small box and put in it a pair of latex gloves, a pair of coverall plastic shoe protectors, a latex hair net and a bottle of alcohol skin rub. The next time a security guard says he has the right to enter my cab I will accede as long as he cleans himself in front of me with the rub, and then dons the protective items. If he wishes to sit down on any surface within the cab, I will require him to provide his own paper cover for my seat or any other surface he comes into contact with.
I am also going to need him to sign (and print his name) a polite notice agreeing that he will not move, or interfere with anything that is not covered by his company’s insurance policy, or anything that is my personal property.
At the site I was based at from 2009 until late last year, the security bods had the “random search button” as workers were leaving at the end of the shift. The “search” consisted of mainly of waving a metal detector over the subject. The products in the warehouse consisted of medicines, drugs etc in non-metallic packaging…
In all the years I worked there I never once pressed the button and was never once challenged or searched.

Brilliant.
…except for the bit highlighted in red. Your company doesn’t give two shiny [zb]s about you. They care about money. Nothing else. You can easily be replaced. They’re not going to “bless” your antagonistic plan.
I was leaving Safeway (a while ago I know) at Chepstow. Had to open back door, no problem then walking back to cab noticed a security guard trying to open drivers door It was locked, I never leave door unlocked when out of sight of it, never have and never will, even in own yard (habit).
Asked what he was trying to do and he simply explained that it was a continuation search from trailer to cab ok, what are you looking for? This is when the proverbial hit the fan!!
As the above posts explain he should have searched me on the way in because he hasn’t a clue what I already had! But he couldn’t/wouldn’t accept this and in view of me locking the cab door was even more suspicious
A few words were exchanged and I asked if he WANTED a slap, then…manager called, over reaction from security. I explained to manger I didn’t threaten but merely ASKED!! Result, banned from site, reported to my office, my office rang and gaffer backed me up. That was RSL distribution based in Staveley, top marks to Dave Cooper.
This sort of thing makes me so glad I’m out of it even though things ain’t as bad over here… yet, mind you, it’s nearly nine years since I drove for a living, so who knows. Whether you’re tramping or day work, I reckon it’s way out of order to expect some git to be able to search your motor. I’m another one that locks up every time I get out, including cars. I fill up with petrol, the car’s locked. I tow a car trailer, it’s got a big padlock on it, when I was on the trucks, it was locked if I wasn’t in it. I’d have probably got myself banned from every poxy site that wanted to do that.
A few years back I was doing agency work for Argos working nights and would be given what ever truck they had spare which usually had a day driver allocated to it.
One night I had to go to a depo to do a change over near Lichfield and spoke to a rather nice female security guard on the way in who checked my paperwork etc.
On the way out I stopped at the gatehouse and the nice female security guard said she had to check the cab and got in and had a rummage through the lockers and then asked me to lift the bed up and joked "this is where I will find all your ■■■■ ", I laughed as I lifted the bed up …until I was confronted by several ■■■■ mags including one opened on the centre page with a female with her legs wide open.
I explained it was not my truck and the mags where not mine …she said thats what they all say.
To all you “I’d slap the guards” heroes, please try it at RAF Croughton. Bet you’re not so flouncy when a yank is opening your cab doors and bonnet, armed with a rifle.
Can`t see what the problem is if you having nothing to hide.
At the end of the day they are only carrying out the job they have been employed for and doing what they are told.
Whats the difference between a random cab inspection in your own depot by your own people or a security check, would you tell your Boss to ■■■■ off

At last… so you won’t mind to a cavity search then? Seeing as you have nothing ‘up there’, and the nice security guard is ‘only doing his job’ …

The problem is it’s my personal space, and my belongings they’re going through. They’re not the police or customs. Look in the trailer, fine, there’s nothing of mine in there. Top step of the cab for a look, that’s fine as I can see his hands on the rails. Any further and touching my stuff, big no no. They’re not the police or customs. Even the police need to prove they have suspicion to carry out a search. Last time I checked they need a judge to sign a warrant to come in your house and riffle through your stuff. So if the police have to jump through hoops, there’s no way some little hitler in a high viz is getting near my personal space
I’ve come across this a few times, including security checks on Southampton docks,
My truck is my home Monday to Friday/Saturday and i don’t where my boots inside the cab, they stay on the step
I’ve got nothing to hide but there’s no way any security person is getting in my cab on my clean carpets with his boots on,
I will comprise and they can climb up to the top step and look inside but i won’t move out of the drivers seat to give them access,
It’s tough if they don’t like it, report me, sack me do what ever but your not getting in with your boots on.

Getting into my cab…truck driving seems different in UK. Not even cops went into my cab in US, even though they have the authority of doing so when performing full dot inspection. Actually I once had officers climb into my truck, but that’s was in and out of prison delivery(20t of soap), no sharp objects or other people then myself. I don’t think I’ll let some schmuck sec guy touch my personal items.
I quite understand drivers (me included) being offended by this but I guess we have to accept it as a facet of modern life. I do however ask the guard for a signed search request written on company notepaper. I explain that this is just a formality in case there is any damage or theft.
htmldude:
If it’s within the company then I don’t bother. Had a “cab search” at a shop once, he climbed up the steps said thank you and climbed back down, didn’t even look.
This is all they ever do . Not worth getting het up about . There is usually a sign on the way in saying they may do this. by entering you agree to this next time tell them on the way in that you don’t want to be searched and see how long you keep your job after you have been turned away for something so simple

I agree. I would be fine as far as them climbing to the top step (and many don’t bother going that far), but I think there’d have to be a real justification to start rifling my gear and turning out my pockets.
The company is entitled to protect their property, but by the same token I’m entitled to the protection of my personal property, as well as mutual respect and the preservation of my dignity.
If the bosses are happy for me to go and rifle their financial accounts and listen in to their private management meetings, to protect my rights speculatively (or if they truly place no weight on privacy, not even their own), then at least there is a balance in that workplace.
But except in that case, and if they’re looking for items small enough to be concealed almost anywhere, then there has to be a limit to the intrusion and instead a better reliance on other means (including means which may be more costly for them, but which are more compatible with mutual respect).

The fact is they can’t turn away everyone - nor is there any real consent or “agreement”, if the implicit threat is to turn you away or terminate your employment if you don’t agree.
